Winona State tennis secures two more victories on the road

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Winona State University women's tennis team picked up two more wins today, including a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) victory over Minnesota State, to finish the weekend 3-0 and improve their winning streak to five matches.

Winona State vs. Minnesota State
The Warriors swung to victories in five singles matches and took the doubles point to beat the Mavericks 6-1. In doubles, Rachel Kelly and Rina Niehoff won 6-1 at first doubles and the second doubles team of Beth Murman/Sara Anderson clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory.

All five singles matches won by the Warriors were in straight sets. Kelly took care of business at the top singles spot, followed by Murman at second singles. Brooke Jorgensen and Brooke Holloway each bounced back from a doubles loss to win their singles matches and earn two points for the Warriors. Anderson had a close first set, winning 7-5, then cruised to a straight-set victory after winning the second set 6-0. Niehoff played a tight match at three singles, before falling 5-10 in the super tiebreaker. The Warrios defeated the Mavericks by a team score of 6-1.

Winona State vs. Gustavus Adolphus
The Warriors began the match against the Gusties in unfamiliar territory, dropping the doubles point and falling behind 0-1 heading into singles play. Murman and Anderson were able to pick up a 6-3 win at second doubles, but GAC earned victories at first and third doubles.

The top four singles players for Winona State were each able to win their matches to secure the 4-3 team win for WSU. Holloway and Mikayla Hanson each dropped decisions at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, but those were the only singles points Gustavus was able to capture. Murman won her match at No. 2 singles to get WSU on the board, but the Warriors were trailing 1-3 and needed all three matches left to go in their favor.

Niehoff won 6-2, 6-2 and picked up the second team point for Winona State. Kelly and Anderson each went the full distance and played full third sets against their opponents. Kelly won her third set, 6-2, to tie the match up at three apiece. As it all came down to the fourth singles position, Anderson rebounded after dropping the second set and won the third set, 6-2, to clinch the match for the Warriors.

WSU earned two NSIC victories and gutted out a win over a tough Gustavus team to go 3-0 on the weekend. The Warriors will next be in action in Florida when they play six matches between March 6-9 on their spring break trip.
