Winona State women's tennis dealt setback by Ferris State

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Winona State University women's tennis team suffered a setback today, falling 1-6 to a tough Ferris State squad.

Beth Murman and Sara Anderson continued their dominance at No. 2 doubles, winning 7-5 to extend their record to 10-0 as a pair on the season. Ferris State won at first and third doubles to earn the team doubles point and be ahead 1-0 going into singles.

The Warriors battled up and down the singles lineup but were unable to come up with enough wins to overtake the Bulldogs. Brooke Jorgensen earned the lone singles win for WSU at No. 4 singles; she was ahead 5-1 in the first set before her opponent retired from the match.

The top three singles players for Winona State were in neck-and-neck battles with their opponents, but each fell just short. Rachel Kelly forced extra games in each set, but dropped the match 5-7, 5-7 at the top singles position. Murman bounced back with a 6-2 second-set win after dropping the first set 5-7 at second singles. She then dropped the third-set tiebreaker in extra points, 11-13. Rina Niehoff went the full distance as well but lost the third-set breaker 8-10. Ferris State took the No. 4 and No. 6 singles matches by scores of 6-0, 6-0 each.

The Warriors (9-3, 5-1 NSIC) will wrap up their spring break trip with matches against North Carolina Wesleyan and Southern New Hampshire tomorrow, March 9.
