Winona State drops NSIC contest to Minnesota State Moorhead, 88-59

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University men's basketball team faced off with nationally ranked Minnesota State Moorhead on Saturday, Jan. 28 and saw the Dragons pull away in the second half, dealing the Warriors a 88-59 loss. 

The Dragons - ranked #15 in the current NCAA Division II poll - held a 45-32 lead at the break and WSU was unable to slow down MSUM in the second half, as the visitors found their shooting touch from outside, knocking down 16-of-32 (50.0%) three pointers. 

WSU struggled to dial in from long range, shooting just 24.0% (6-of-25) from three-point land and fared only slightly better from the floor overall, shooting 24-of-67 (35.8%) as a team. MSUM earned 16 trips to the foul line, hitting 14, while Winona State was 5-of-7 on free throws.  The Dragons held a 36-32 edge in rebounds. 

Winona State had three players reach double-digits, with Connor Drew scoring 14 points. Luke Martens and James Kelley added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Carson Arenz and Connor Dillon both had five rebounds, joining Martens to share the team lead on the boards. 

The Dragons were paced by Gavin Baumgartner with 19 points. Dane Zimmer and Baumgartner both had eight boards for Minnesota State Moorhead. 

With the loss, Winona State falls to 11-10 overall, 6-10 in the NSIC.  The Warriors are next in action on Friday, Feb. 3 when they take on Augustana University. The Warriors and Vikings will tip off at 5:30 p.m. in McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court.
