NSIC Weekend : Men's Basketball

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University men's basketball team hits the road for an important NSIC weekend, traveling to the University of Sioux Falls on Friday, Feb. 10 at 5:30pm and then Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 3:30pm. 
  
The Warriors are 13-10 this season and hold an 8-10 record within the NSIC as WSU heads into a critical stretch of four games to end the regular season. Winona State is working to secure a NSIC postseason playoff bid and currently reside in sixth place in the NSIC South. USF leads the division at 11-7 in NSIC play and is 16-8 overall. Southwest Minnesota State enters the weekend in third, owning a 10-8 NSIC mark and 14-9 overall record.

  • Friday's contest will take place in USF's Stewart Center while Saturday's game will be in the R/A Facility at Southwest Minnesota State.  

WINONA STATE STORYLINES 

  • The Warriors are 13-10 overall and sit at 8-10 within the NSIC. 

  • Winona State averages 69.0 points per game offensively while giving up 69.0 points per game to opponents as well. 

  • WSU holds the second-best turnover margin in the league, averaging 11.0 forced turnovers to 8.7 of their own for a 2.33 margin. 

  • Connor Dillon is the reigning NSIC South Player of the Week and led WSU to a sweep of their most recent home NSIC weekend.  

  • Dillon is averaging 18.3 ppg and has knocked down 42.0% (162-of-378) of his shots from the floor.  

  • Luke Martens adds 12 points per game and pulls in a team-high 6.4 rebounds each game. 

  • Connor Drew is the third Warrior in double figures, notching 11.6 points each game to go along with 5.5 boards per game. 

  • Head coach Todd Eisner is in his eighth year at Winona State and 25th year as a college head coach.  

University of Sioux Falls STORYLINES 

  • The Cougars are 16-8 overall and 11-7 in the NSIC but lost both contests on the road most recently, falling 69-67 at CSP and 73-42 at MSU Mankato. 

  • USF scores 72.5 points per game offensively and allows 69.2 points per game to opponents for a 29 scoring margin. 

  • Matt Cartwright leads USF and the NSIC in scoring, averaging 21.7 ppg. 

  • No other Cougar averages double-digits in per-game scoring; the next best is Jack Thompson at 9.4 ppg.  

  • Thompson leads USF in rebounding at 5.2 rpg & Cougar teammate Chase Grinde is close behind at 5.1 rpg.  

  • Chris Johnson is in his 15th season with the University of Sioux Falls 

Southwest Minnesota State STORYLINES 

  • The Mustangs are 14-9 overall and 10-8 in the NSIC after a weekend split against Minnesota State and Concordia, St. Paul last weekend. 

  • SMSU scores 67.5 points/game offensively and allows 63.7 points each game to opponents. 

  • Southwest Minnesota State has lost three of its last four contests; the Mustangs are 8-3 at home. 

  • Dunwa Omot leads SMSU in scoring at 16.4 points per game. 

  • Jake Phipps is the top Mustang rebounder (6.8pg) and Cliff McCray leads the team in steals with 34 on the year.  

  • Brad Bigler is in his 14th season at Southwest Minnesota State University.  

WARRIOR NOTABLES 

  • The Warriors were selected 10th overall and seventh in the NSIC South by coaches around the league. 

  • Former Warrior standout Caleb Wagner joined Eisner's staff in the off-season.  

  • The Warriors won the 2005-06 and 2007-08 NCAA Division II National Championships.
