Winona State softball picks up sweep at UMary

BISMARCK, N.D. - The Winona State University softball team collected a sweep on the road at the University of Mary on Sunday, April 23, defeating the Marauders 10-2 in game one and setting a new season-high in runs scored while beating UMary 19-7 in nightcap.

Winona State 10, UMary 2

Winona State only scored in one inning, but the ten runs that WSU tallied in the third inning was enough to dispatch the host Marauders, 10-2.

UMary scored first in the game, plating a single run in the bottom of the second but WSU responded with force in their next at-bats, posting 10 runs on UMary.

Back-to-back singles by Abbie Hlas and Carly Engelhardt started the rally for WSU, which was sustained thanks to a Marissa Mullen single and Libby Neveau home run. Minutes later, Macy Brodin hit another Warrior home run, followed by an Engelhardt long ball in her second at-bat of the inning.  When the dust settled, eight Warrior hits - including three home runs - put WSU in front for good.

Abby Smith scattered five UMary hits over five full innings of work, striking out seven Marauders while not allowing a walk.  Smith's victory, her 16th of the year, ties the sophomore from Hartland, Wis. at the top of the NSIC win column.

As a team UMary, scored twice on four hits, while Winona State collected ten runs on 11 hits and committed one error in the field.

Winona State 19, UMary 7

In game two, Abbie Hlas went 4-for-4 at the plate and Logan Anderson was 3-for-4 as WSU scored 19 runs for the first time this season, having beaten Concordia St. Paul 18-14 on day, Wednesday, April 12 in their previous high-water mark.

Skyler Calmes got the start in the Warrior circle and went 3 and 2/3s innings for the win. Morgan Smetana entered the game in the fourth inning, facing eight batters to close out the game.

Libby Neveau and Teaghen Amwoza joined Hlas in hitting home runs in the contest while Zoe May, Logan Anderson and Savannah Serdynski collected doubles against UMary.

WSU's offensive explosion started in the second inning, leveraging three hits and taking advantage of two UMary errors to plate six runs, including a Libby Neveau home run to center field that scored Marissa Mullen and Carly Engelhardt

The third inning saw Winona State parlay four singles, a pair of walks and two doubles for another six-run frame.  Logan Anderson and Savannah Serdynski had the extra-base hits for WSU in the sixth, helping to put the game out of reach from the host Marauders.

Overall, UMary scored seven runs on 11 hits and committed two errors. Winona State tallied 19 runs on sixteen hits and had one miscue.

With the wins, Winona State moves to 33-12 overall and 16-4 in NSIC play. WSU is set to host Minnesota State on Tuesday, April 25; the Warriors and Mavericks will see first pitch at 2 p.m. on Maynard Johnson Field in Winona.
