NSIC Weekend: Men's Basketball

WINONA, Minn. -  The Winona State University men's basketball team will host nationally-ranked Minnesota State University Moorhead on Friday, January 26, and St. Cloud State University on Saturday, January 27. The Warrior-Dragon showdown will start 7:30 p.m. on Friday and the WSU - SCSU matchup will see a 5:30 p.m. tip on Saturday.  Both contests will take place in McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court.

In addition, the WSU Alumni Office welcomes back Winona State men's basketball alums for an alumni game and social prior to Saturday's contest against the Huskies.  Click here for more info. 
  
Winona State (10-8, 5-7 NSIC) faces a Minnesota State Moorhead team on Friday that is currently 17-1 on the year and tied atop the NSIC standings with Minnesota State.  On Saturday, the Warriors will face former WSU standout and recent WSU Hall of Fame Inductee Quincy Henderson and a St. Cloud State squad currently sitting in 12th place in the NSIC. MSUM enters the weekend winning two straight games, while St. Cloud State comes off a loss to Augustana University 66-77 and will play the No. 5-ranked Mavericks in Mankato on Friday before making their way to McCown on Saturday. 
 
Leading the Warriors on the season is Connor Dillon with 21.0 points per game, while also being second on the team in total assists (47) and steals (15).  Warrior teammate and brother Declan Dillon is second on the squad with 5.1 rebounds per game and leads the team in assists (58). 

This weekend's contests are also a part of the NCAA Division II Official's Appreciation Week during the winter sports seasons.   A warm 'Warrior Thanks' to the NSIC officials assigned to the Winona State contests for your hard work and dedication to our student-athletes.

WINONA STATE STORYLINES   

  • WSU is 10-8 on the year, 5-7 in NSIC play.   
  • This Saturday is alumni weekend for the men's basketball team.  
  • WSU is shooting 45.1% as a team from the floor. 
  • The Warriors are averaging 70.2 points/game and conceding 70.2 points per outing.  
  • Winona State has scored 1264 points on the year and opponents have scored an even 1264 as well 
  • Leading the Warriors on the season is Connor Dillon with 21.0 points per game. 
  • Declan Dillon and Carson Arenz lead the team in rebounds with 5.1 per game. 
  • Brock Voigt became the most recent Winona State player to reach the career 1,000-point mark, scoring 20 points at Minot State to the 1,000-point mark on the dot.
  • For his efforts last weekend, Voigt was tabbed for this week's Shining Five by the NSIC, joining four other standouts from around the league.
  • Connor Dillon scored 32 points against the University of Mary last Friday night, marking the fourth time this season Dillon has hit or eclipsed the 30-point mark in a game.
  • Dillon played 39 of the 40 available minutes vs. UMary, and was not flagged with a single personal foul. Dillon was 11-of-15 at the free throw line, 3-of-6 from behind the arc, notched three steals, and had four rebounds in another impressive outing for Winona State.
  • With the win over the Marauders, WSU snapped a two-game skid against UMary.
  • Drew Adams scored 15 points coming off the bench for WSU against Minot State, going 3-for-6 from behind the arc and was 4-of-4 at the line.
  • Winona State has tallied more steals than their opponents - 90 (5.0 pg) for WSU vs. 80 (4.0) for opponents, but the Warriors block fewer shots 41 (2.3) than the competition 59 (3.3)
  • Heading into the season, Eisner's all-time coaching record stands at 531-263, including a 115-97 Winona State ledger. 

MSU Moorhead STORYLINES

  • The Dragons enter the weekend at 17-1 overall and 11-1 in the NSIC. 
  • MSU Moorhead enters the weekend ranked No. 3 in the NABC DII poll.
  • Winona State holds a 6-10 record vs. MSUM dating back to January 15, 2011.  
  • WSU has lost three straight to the Dragons dating back to November 2021.  
  • MSUM has won their last two games.  
  • The Dragons won 79-72 against Concordia St. Paul in their most recent action.   
  • As a team, MSUM is shooting 44.9% from the floor and 74.7% at the line.   
  • MSUM hits 31.5% of their three-point attempts.  
  • Jacob Beeninga is averaging 18.6 points per game for the Dragons.  
  • Tim Bergstraser is in his second season as head coach for the Dragons. 

St. Cloud State STORYLINES  

  • The Huskies enter the weekend 8-10 overall and 4-8 in the NSIC.  
  • Winona State holds a 14-8 record against SCSU, dating back to Mar. 7, 2009.  
  • SCSU beat Winona State 74-70 last year.   
  • St. Cloud State is 4-6 over their last ten games.   
  • The Huskies lost to Augustana 66-77 at home in their most recent action.   
  • As a team, SCSU is shooting 43.3% from the floor and 72.0% at the line.   
  • SCSU hits 34.7% of their three-point attempts.  
  • Luke Taylor leads the team in scoring with 10.5 ppg.  
  • Former WSU standout Quincy Henderson is in his second year at SCSU.  

Warrior Notables:

  • Winona State was the NCAA Division II National Champion in 2006 and 2008; WSU was runner-up in 2007.  
  • The Warriors added two assistant coaches for the 2023-24 campaign; Devin Whitelow and Cole Rabedeaux are both in their first year on the Warrior sideline. 
  • Whitelow was the 2020-21 NSIC Don Olson Award honoree as a senior point guard for Winona State.  
  • Rabedeaux was a standout player at UW-Eau Claire and had an assistant coaching stint with NCAA Division I University of Houston.
