WINONA STATE DROPS GAME AGAINST HENDERSON STATE

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Winona State men's basketball team competed in their second game at the 2024 Central Region Challenge, where they faced off against Henderson State University, falling 69-74.

After the loss, the Warriors begin their season 1-1 after splitting games in the Central Region Challenge.

How it happened:
Jhei-R Jones would put the Warriors on the board with a three-pointer to begin the game. WSU and the Reddies would battle back and forth until the ten minute media timeout where the Warriors would see themselves down eight points after a Deazhon Perkins layup for HSU. An and-one jumper from Jhei-R Jones would cut the Warriors lead back to eight points after the Reddies would go on a run of their own following the media timeout. Henderson State would not back down in the first half, responding to every Winona State basket. Luke Haertle would get the final bucket of the half, cutting the lead to single digits at 30-39.

Henderson State would get on the board first knocking down a three pointer to start the second half. A Tyler Mason three-pointer and a couple of free throws and layups from Luke Haertle and Jhei-R Jones cut the lead to six points. With one minute left in the game the Warriors would cut the lead to three points with two more free throws from Luke Haertle, but the Reddies would keep the Warriors at bay knocking down some late game free throws of their own.

  • Luke Haertle led the team in points with 21, shooting 7-11 from the field and 7-11 from the free throw line.
  • Nick Taylor would lead the team in rebound with seven.
  • Isaiah Thompson would shoot 2-4 from beyond the arc for 14 points and 6 rebounds.
