Winona State softball sweeps UMary on the road

BISMARCK, N.D. - The Winona State University softball team earned a pair of NSIC wins on the road with a sweep against the University of Mary in Bismarck on Saturday, beating the Marauders by 10-0 and 5-2 scorelines.

Winona State saw a stellar pitching effort from starter Izzy Howe in game one and an equally effective outing from Abby Smith in game two, as the WSU duo held UMary to just three combined hits in the opening innings of the two contests.

Game 1: Winona State 10, UMary 0 | Izzy Howe allowed just one hit in four full innings of work to help deal UMary a shutout loss as WSU ran away to a 10-run rule victory. The Warriors plated four runs in the second inning and added three more in the third frame to claim the opening contest. Howe struck out five, walked one, and conceded just a third-inning single en route to the win. Morgan Smetana delivered an impressive three-strikeout fifth frame to close the contest.

WSU was led at the plate by Teaghen Amwoza who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Alyssa Woelfel who was 3-for-3 with three RBI. Amwoza and Woelfel both had home runs in the game. WSU racked up 14 hits overall at the plate.

Game 2: Winona State 5, UMary 2 | WSU opened with a three-run first frame and held off a UMary rally late to earn the series sweep. Teaghen Amwoza delivered her second home run of the afternoon in the third inning and claimed three RBI in the nightcap. Amwoza also had a double, as did Warrior teammate Kiley Slaats; Slaats added a pair of stolen bases to the Winona State offensive effort.

Abby Smith earned the win for WSU with a two-hit effort over five innings, moving to 9-6 on the year. Jayda Berg threw the final two Warrior innings in relief as Winona State extended their winning streak to 14 games over the University of Mary.

Winona State (26-14, 10-4 NSIC) will wrap up their North Dakota trip at Minot State University on Sunday, April 14. The Warriors will square off with the Beavers at 11am in an NSIC doubleheader.
