WINONA STATE TOPS NORTHERN STATE ON THE ROAD

ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Winona State Univeristy men's basketball out scored Northern State 74-69 for the single game weekend at NSU. 

The Warriors had two players score in the double digits, with sophomore Luke Haertle leading the charge scoring 35 and nine rebounds and also going 5-7 beyond the arc. 


How it Happened: 
Arius Alijosius was the first to score with a layup off of a pass by Haertle three minutes into the first half. The Wolves' Kwat Abdelkarim answered back just under two minutes later with a three point basket to put NSU up 3-2. WSU would fall behind to Northern State until there was 11 second left in the first half to regain the lead 35-32 going into half time with the help of Tyler Mason, Alijosius, and Haertle's scoring efforts and the rebounding efforts if Isaiah Thompson and Connor Drew

Winona State held the lead until the 15 minute mark into the second half where the Wolves went up 45-42, but with the help of Thompson below the basket, put the Warrior back in the lead, 46-45. The Warriors continue to extend their lead by Alijosius and Haertle draining three point attempts along with rebounding efforts by Drew and Thompson and steals by Mason and Haertle kept WSU with the advantage through the second half. WSU held the lead for the majority of the second half and secured the win with a made free throw made by Haertle with 11 second left in the game and a rebound by Drew at the last second of the half. 

Team Comparisons: 
  • WSU shot 49% from the field and 36.4% beyond the arc while Northern State was 42.4% from the field and 37.8% from 3-point range. 
  • The Warriors out rebounded the Wolves 35-30. 
  • Winona State was 16-23 from the line while NSU was 5-7. 
  • The Warrior collected eight steals compared to the five that Northern State collected. 
Statistical Leaders: 
  • Luke Haertle scored 35 points to lead the team against NSU. 
  • Haertle also led the team in rebounds collecting nine. 
  • Isaiah Thompson led the Warriors with four assists. 
  • Tyler Mason led the way with three steals. 

The Winona State University men's basketball team will be back in action at home for a week night match up against the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs on Wednesday, January 29 with tip off set for 5:30 p.m.
