JAYDA BERG'S PERFECT GAME HIGHLIGHTS SWEEP AT THE MUSTANG INVITE

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - The Winona State University softball team made the trip down to Sioux Center, Iowa and swept the weekend in two doubleheaders against William Jewell College and Quincy University on Sunday, February 16 and Monday, February 17. Jayda Berg closed out the weekend by throwing the fourth perfect game in Winona State history.

The Warriors traveled down to Sioux Center to take part of the Mustang Invitational after coming off their first two wins of the season against Grand View University. WSU swept William Jewell in their first doubleheader, 15-3 and 10-2, and also swept Quincy in their doubleheader match up, 10-2, and 11-0. 


WSU vs William Jewell: 
Game 1: The Warriors and the Cardinals started the game off scoreless only through the first inning, but in the top of the second inning WSU's bats got hot and with a singles to the right side by Nora Brandt and Indigo Fish. Braelee Jodarski then stepped up to the plate and hit her first home run of the game to put Winona State up 3-0. Izzy Howe kept WJC from getting on base through the fourth inning as the Warriors bats got hot again in the top of the fourth inning. In the top of the fourth, Brandt singled up the middle to start off the inning, followed by Fish getting walked and Jodarski hitting a single to score Brandt. The Warriors weren't done yet in the fourth, with Tiegan Mancuso reaching on off of an error and Sam Keller hitting a single to bring in Fish and Jodarski, going up 6-0. Logan Anderson then came up and hit a single to score Mancuso to put WSU up 7-0 after the top of the fourth. The Cardinals ended up getting on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning off of a single and two walks to plate their first run of the game. Winona State wanted to continue to extend their lead in the top of the sixth with a solo home run by Jodarski to put them up 8-1. JWC answered back at the bottom of the inning with a single, two fly outs and another single to score a run. The top of the seventh the Warriors continued to find the gaps. Brandt singled to start out the inning followed by a single by Fish. Jaden Johnson got hit by a pitch to load the bases and Jordaski took the ball deep and hit a grand slam to record her third home run of the game. WSU wasn't done there, Kailey Plank and Ashlee Chantos singled with Dana Jones getting walked to load the bases again. Nicole Weinberger hit a sac fly to center field to score Plank, which was followed by a single hit by Alyssa Woelfel to score Chantos, leaving Jones on second. Bryn Elsenpeter came in and hit a double to score Jones to put Winona State up 15-2. After a single out with Howe on the mound, Shayna Woolwine came in to pitch for the Warriors. The Cardinals got on the board one last time off of a home run to left center, but were unable to get an other batters on base. Warriors won 15-3. 

Game 2: Winona State kept their bats hot going into the second game with a double by Keller. Anderson got herself a double, but Keller was unable to make it under the tag at home plate. Brandt them hit herself a double to score Anderson to put WSU up 1-0 after the first inning. The bats continued to stay hot for WSU in the second inning with Fish hitting a single to start out the bottom of the second followed by Elsenpeter getting on with a single as well. Jordaski stepped up to the plate and hit a single to score Fish and Mancuso had a sac bunt to move runners into scoring position. Keller was then walked to load the bases and Kiley Slaats singled to score Elsenpeter to put the Warriors up 4-0. In the bottom of the third Jenna James took the ball over the left field fence for her first collegiate home run, putting the score at 5-0. On the mound, Jayda Berg kept the Cardinals scoreless through three innings. In the top of the foruth, William Jewell was able to get a couple runs across but getting runners on with a hit by pitch, a single, a ground out to advance runners, a single to score their first run, and a fielder's choice to plate their second run. WSU weren't able to plate any runs in the bottom of the fourth, but were able to in the fifth. The bottom of the fifth started with Brandt getting on off of a single followed by James and Fish getting singles. Elsenpeter reach on off of a fielder's choice, which scored Plank, who pinch ran for Brandt. Woelfel got on off of another fielder's choice and Keller reached on off fielding error, which scored Fish. Slaats then singled to score Elsenpeter to put Winona State up 9-2. Berg and the rest of the Warrior defense kept WJC from getting any more runs in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Brandt started it off again with a single followed by Fish getting a single herself. Jordaski was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and Chantos hit the single scoring Brandt to take game two, 10-2. 


WSU vs Quincy:
Game 1: Starting the first game against Quincy Univeristy, both teams faced a pitchers' dual through the top of the second inning. The Warriors were able to find a way to get on the board first in the bottom of the second with Elsenpeter starting WSU off with a double to left center. Elsenpeter was able advance to third on a ground out hit by Mancuso and then scored on a wild pitch. WSU kept it going after Keller and Slaats reached on off of walks to put runners on first and second. Anderson then reached on off of an error by the right fielder, which scored Keller and Slaats, putting Winona State up 3-0. Berg then struck out all three batters for Quincy to bring them to the bottom of the third inning. In the bottom of the third, Fish hit a single to start off the inning. Jodarski came up and hit a single as well to put runners on first and third. Elsenpeter grounded out, but moved Jordaski into scoring position and Mancuso hit a single to score Fish. Keller then hit a double to score Jodarski and Slaats hit a single to score Mancuso. Anderson was walked to load the bases with Brandt being walked to score Keller to end the bottom of the inning 7-0. Quincy was able to plate a run in the top of the fourth off of two singles to put runners on first and second and a double to score their first run, 7-1. The Warriors and the Hawks were unable to score until the bottom of the sixth, where Jodarski took the ball over the left field fence for a solo home run, followed by Elsenpeter and Mancuso getting walked. Keller then hit a single to score Elsenpeter and Slaats was walked to load the bases. Anderson hit a single to center field to score Mancuso and win game one, 10-2. 

Game 2: The Warriors got the bats going in the top of the second with a scoreless first inning. The second inning started off with Woelfel hitting a double to start things off followed by Fish getting walked to put runners on first and second. James hit a single to the third base side to load the bases. Jodarski then hit a fly ball to right field to score Woelfel. Johnson came up and hit a double to right center to score Fish and Chantos reached on off of an error, which scored James. Keller then came up and hit a three run home run going up 6-0. Winona State was not done there, Anderson and Woelfel were walked bringing Fish to the plate. Fish hit a double to left center scoring Woelfel and Anderson. James stepped into the box and got walked, putting runners on first and second. Jordarski came up to bat and hit a three run home run over the center field fence to put WSU up 11-0. After numerous substitutions for both teams, both the Hawks and the Warriors were unable to bat in an more runs. Warriors run ruled Quincy in five innings, where Jayda Berg earned herself a perfect game.

Statistical Leaders on the Weekend: 
  • Jodarski led the Warriors with five home runs and 15 RBIs on the weekend. 
  • Keller led the team in batting average, with a .750, doubles (4), and hits (9).
  • Anderson and Slaats led with walks (3). 
  • Howe led in strike outs collecting 9 on the weekend. 
  • Berg pitched a perfect game against Quincy University in game two. 

Team Comparasions: 
  • The Warriors had 122 total at bats with 54 hits, 46 runs, 45 RBIs, 11 doubles, seven home runs, and 20 walks on the weekend.
  • William Jewell had 48 total at bats with 10 hits, 5 runs, 5 RBIs, and 2 walks in the doubleheader against WSU. 
  • Quincy had 41 total at bats with 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBIs, 1 double, and 2 walks in the doubleheader against Winona State. 

The Winona State University softball team will hit the road down to Rosemont, Ill. for the Lewis Dome Invitational Starting on Saturday, February 22 and ending on Sunday, February 23, where the Warriors will play Grand Valley State University, William Jewell College, Purdue Northwest, and Lewis University.
