WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University softball team swept Wayne State during senior day on Saturday, April 26 at Maynard R. Johnson Field putting head coach
Greg Jones at his 1,000th career win with the Warriors.
Game 1| WSC 5 - WSU 6:
Warriors were the first to get on the board in the bottom of the first with a three run homerun hit by
Bryn Elsenpeter, which score
Indigo Fish and
Logan Anderson to put them up right away 3-0. The Wildcats would cut the deficit in the top of the third Kennadi Borngrebe hit in Leah Chance on a single to center field. WSU would then extend their lead in the bottom of the fourth off a single hit by
Sam Keller, which scored pinch runner,
Kailey Plank, going up 4-1. WSC would then take the lead in the top of the sixth off of an error made by the third baseman then three run homerun hit by Hayley Murphy to put them up 5-4. Warriors would then take the lead and win in the bottom of the seventh when Anderson hit a single to left field to score Keller then Elsenpeter's double to score pinch runner,
Ashlee Chantos, secured the win for the Warriors, 6-5.
In the circle,
Jayda Berg got the start and pitched five innings collecting one strikeout against 27 batters and
Izzy Howe closed out game one with two innings pitched with four strikeouts against seven batters. At the plate, Keller went 3 for 4 with a double and a RBI, Anderson went 1 for 3 with a RBI, and Elsenpeter went 2 for 4 with a homerun, a double and four RBIs.
Game 2| WSC 1 - WSU 2:
Winona State was first to get a run across again in game two in the bottom of the second.
Tiegan Mancuso hit causing an error by the third baseman, which scored Elsenpeter to put WSU up 1-0. The Warriors would then score in the bottom of the fifth off a single hit by
Alyssa Woelfel, which scored Mancuso. The Wildcats would cut the Warriors' lead in half off of a single hit by Maddie Scobee, which scored Emilee Marth putting the score at 2-1. Neither team could cross homeplate, leading to the WSU victory and earning head coach,
Greg Jones, his 1,000th career win as the head coach.
In the circle, Howe pitched 5.1 innings collecting seven strikeouts against 23 batters and Berg pitched 1.2 innings collecting one strikeout against five batters. At the plate, Woelfel went 1 for 3 with a RBI, Anderson went 1 for 2, and Mancuso went 1 for 2 with a RBI.
The Winona State University softball team will be back in action on Sunday, April 27 when they will host the University of Sioux Falls on Maynard R. Johnson Field with first pitches set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
