Student-Athlete Definition
A student-Athlete who is enrolled at WSU and has begun his/her first day of initial full-time collegiate enrollment or who has reported for intercollegiate practice at WSU.
Academic Eligibility
As a student-athlete, you must maintain certain academic criteria to be eligible for practice, athletics aid and competition.
- Full-Time Enrollment-12 credit hours Student Athletes must be a full-time student in order to be eligible for practice and competition. The only students who do not need 12 credit hours are those in their final semester who have less than 12 credits left to graduate. This is the only exception to this rule and these student-athletes may continue to practice and compete despite being enrolled in less than 12 credit hours, if, they have notification on file, with the compliance office prior to the term in which they are less than full-time. This must include verification from the Registrar that they are taking what they need to graduate.
- Cumulative GPA=2.00 A student-athlete must maintain a 2.00 cumulative GPA by the start of each fall semester. Any student-athletes who fall below the 2.00 GPA minimum and are enrolled full-time may continue to practice, but must sit out of competition until their cumulative GPA is above a 2.00.
- Annual Credit Completion Competition Requirement: 9/18/24 Rule Student-athletes must complete at least 9 credits each full-time semester they are enrolled to be eligible for the next semester, 18 credits during the regular academic year (not including summer) to include fall/spring semesters and 24 credits total for the calendar year (may use up to 6 credits from summer term) annually to remain eligible for competition.
- Progress Towards Degree (PTD) Requirement Student-Athletes must declare a major following their 2nd year of enrollment. Starting the beginning of the 3rd year of enrollment, the annual credit completion requirement (9/18/24 rule) must be satisfied from credits that are used towards designated degree completion. A minor may be added at anytime prior to the start of a semester and credits applied towards that minor may be used to satisfy the 9/18/24 rule, a maximum of 6 credit hours per regular academic term. Credit hours earned in a voluntary or optional minor during the summer may not be used to meet PTD requirements.

Athletic Scholarships
Grant-In-Aid/Scholarship/Employment Each scholarship can be offered for each semester. Summer school is not covered in your scholarship. Be aware that full and partial scholarships do not automatically cover four years. The renewal of scholarships is under the discretion of each head coach.
- Reduction or cancelation of aid during the period of the award: Athletic scholarships may be reduced or canceled during the academic year if the recipient:
- Renders himself/herself ineligible for intercollegiate competition;
- Fraudulently misrepresents any information on an application, letter of intern, or financial aid agreement;
- Engages in misconduct warranting substantial disciplinary penalty
- Voluntarily withdraws (quits) from a sport at any time for personal reasons.
- The renewal of the scholarship shall be made on or before July 1st prior to the academic year in which it is to be effective. The institution shall promptly notify in writing each student-athlete who received an award the previous academic year and who has eligibility remaining in the sport whether the grant has been renewed or not renewed for the upcoming academic year. Notification of renewals and non-renewals must come from the Financial Aid office. If you believe a decision to reduce or cancel your award is unfair or unjustified, you may request a hearing as provided by NCAA regulations. To make this request, contact the Financial Aid office within 2 weeks of the date of the non-renewal or reduction letter. A hearing will be scheduled. Inability to reach reasonable athletic performance goals, problems of motivation, incompatibility with coaching staff or teammates, etc., are considered legitimate reasons for non-renewal. If, during the school year, you feel there is a possibility your scholarship may not be renewed, you should talk to your coach.
Outside Aid Awards
Any student-athletes receiving monetary awards from an outside source (not to include government grants/loans, Winona State issued monies or Winona State athletic aid must report these awards to the compliance department. Examples of such awards may include but are not limited to booster club awards, local scholarships, VFW, Church scholarships, etc. You are responsible for having an Outside Aid Award form filled out by the person who has given you this award. Any outside aid that limits or restricts your institutional choice of attendance as a criteria for receiving the award or is based on athletics ability is impermissible to receive by DII student-athletes.

Year-Round Drug Testing
The NCAA randomly selects institutions and student-athletes for drug testing throughout the academic year, including the summer. All student-athletes are subject to drug testing before, during or after their competitive seasons. All student-athletes need to be aware of the
NCAA Banned Substances. All student-athletes should inform their Winona State athletic trainer of any/all medications, prescriptions, over the counter supplements/vitamins they are taking. The FDA does not strictly regulate the supplement industry; therefore the purity and safely of the supplements cannot be guaranteed which can lead to a positive drug test.
Sports Wagering
NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes from participating in any gambling activity that involves any sport sponsored by the NCAA at any level. Any activity that involves putting something as risk for the chance to win something in return is considered sports wagering and an NCAA violation. Risk + Reward = Violation. This includes fantasy leagues and tournament brackets that meet the above guidelines.
