About Student-Athlete Services

Mission Statement

The Mission of the Student-Athlete Services (SAS) Department at Winona State University is to provide WSU student-athletes with the support they need to maximize their potential as students and as people.  SAS staff are dedicated to providing quality academic support and skill development to all student-athletes.  To facilitate the best possible collegiate experience, SAS staff work collaboratively with coaches, faculty, and other administrators in service of our student-athletes.  The overall wellbeing of our student-athletes is our main priority in everything that we do.

Services:

Advising

Each sports team is assigned an SAS advisor who arranges academic and personal advising. All first-year student-athletes will meet with their SAS advisor on a weekly basis. All other student-athletes will meet with their advisor as needed. SAS advisors assist student-athletes with time management and study skills, class registration, selecting a major, and in various other areas.

Academic Monitoring

SAS Staff monitor the academic progress of all student-athletes as it relates to grades, eligibility, and progress towards a degree. If one of the stated areas becomes an issue for a student-athlete, an SAS staff member will meet with that student-athlete to discuss and develop a strategy to resolve the issue.

Priority Registration

Priority Registration is given to all WSU student-athletes in an attempt to accommodate travel, practice, and competition schedules. This allows student-athletes the opportunity to register for classes early to ensure they remain on track for graduation.

Structured Study Hall

The Structured Study Hall program is designed to help at-risk student-athletes improve their studies. Student-athletes in Structured Study Hall are required to dedicate a predetermined amount of time each week to schoolwork. Structured Study Hall is supervised by an SAS staff member and provides the student-athlete with a quiet and productive atmosphere. A student-athlete can earn their way out of Structured Study Hall if they achieve a satisfactory GPA.  If a student-athlete’s cumulative GPA falls below the guideline, they will again be required to utilize Structured Study Hall.
