Neal Mundahl is the head coach of the men’s (10th season) and women’s (13th season) cross country teams at Winona State University. 

In 1998 Mundahl was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year after leading the Warriors to a tie for third in the NSIC. In 1999 the Warriors finished the season with sole possession of third place in the NSIC.

In 2001 Mundahl would earn his second NSIC Coach of the Year award as the Warriors finished second in the NSIC and for the second consecutive season had a runner (Melissa Meyer) finish in the top 10 earning All-NSIC honors. 

Mundahl earned his third NSIC Coach of the Year in six seasons following the 2003 season. He led the Warriors to a second place finish in the NSIC for the third consecutive season. Two Warriors (Nicole Coleman and Heidi Inabnit) earned All-NSIC recognition. 

The women’s cross country team had the best season, so far, under the direction of Mundahl in 2004. The Warriors won both the NSIC Team Championship and the NSIC Individual Championship (Amelia Soto). Four Warriors (Soto, Coleman, Inabnit, and Jesse Cummings) finished in the top 10 of the NSIC Women’s Championships. Mundahl earned his second consecutive, and fourth overall, NSIC Coach of the Year award in 2004. 

In total Mundahl has coached 14 All-NSIC athletes combined in women’s and men’s cross country in addition to over 80 combined NSIC All-Academic selections. 

Mundahl is also beginning his 13th season as an assistant coach for the track and field team at Winona State University where he coaches the distance runners. 

Mundahl was an award winning runner at Winona State University. He competed for four years for the Warriors in indoor and outdoor track and field and cross country. As a cross country runner, Mundahl qualified twice for the National Intercollegiate Athletic Association (NAIA) Championships. In 1978 Mundahl earned NAIA Indoor Track & Field All-American honors in the 1,000 yard run. Mundahl was also a NCAA II National Outdoor Track & Field Championships Qualifier. 

Mundahl graduated from Winona State in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. Following that Mundahl earned his Master’s of Science degree in Biological Sciences from Michigan Technological University in 1980. Mundahl would go on to earn a Doctorate in 1984 from Miami (Ohio) University in Zoology. 

Mundahl is a professor in the Biology Department at Winona State University. 

Mundahl lives in Winona, MN with his wife Sue and their children Erik and Darcy.
