The 2022-23 season marked Jeff Straight’s eighth year as the head men’s golf coach at Winona State.

Prior to the 2018 season he was promoted to Director of Golf – overseeing both the Warrior men's and women's programs. Straight has been named the NSIC Men's Golf Coach of the Year three times in his time with WSU while helping build the Warrior golf program in to one of the best in the NSIC and the Central Region. 

Straight has a long history of coaching a variety of sports, including football and basketball in addition to golf. He has experience as a caddie on the PGA, Nike, Web.com and celebrity tours and has competed as a player in several state amateur events.

Season Recaps

2022-23: Winona State successfully hosted the 2023 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Regional Tournament at The Bridges Golf Course in Winona. Serving as Tournament Director, Straight led a tournament showcasing the top NCAA Division II men's teams and individuals in the Midwest. Straight also mentored Alessandro Trenta, the NSIC Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year. Trenta qualified for the 2023 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Regional Tournament as an individual, as well as Carly Moon, who qualified for the Division II Women's Golf Regional Tournament.  

2021-22: The midway point of the current academic year has Winona State well positioned to defend their 2021 NSIC Men's Golf Tournament team title and earn a trip back to the NCAA Tournament. In addition, the women's program will look to build on their first-ever Watkins Invitational title and continue to climb up the NSIC women's golf ranks.

2020-21: Straight led the men's team to the NSIC Conference Championship and was named the NSIC Coach of the Year. Highlights include:

-Men's Team won the 2021 NSIC Conference Championship with a final round of 288 at Shoal Creek in Kansas City. Mo

-Matthew Chandler named first team All-Conference and Conference All-Tournament Team.

-Straight was named the 2020-2021 NSIC Coach of the year.

-Men's Golf earned Golf Coaches Association All-Academic Team Honors with a 3.42 GPA along with 6 Warriors earning a 4.0 GPA. 

-The Women's Golf Team earned a 5th Place finish at the NSIC Championship. 
 

2019-20:  In a spectacular season that was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, head coach Jeff Straight and his team turned in an tremendous effort.  Highlights for Straight included: 

· Mentoring a team which shot 10 under par final round at the Watkins Invitational, a WSU and NSIC record.

· Season scoring average of 290 which was 15th in the nation a Winona State and NSIC record.

· Winona State finished the season ranked fourth in the Central Region and third in the Central Region in scoring average.

· The Warriors earned a 25-0 record against NSIC competition during the 2019-2020 season.

· WSU earned two tournament wins and six Top-5 finishes in seven tournaments played.

· Brady Madsen who had a 71.3 scoring average, #1 in the NSIC, ranked 20th in the Nation, received All-American, Ping all Region Awards, fired a WSU school record 64 Las Vegas.

· Tyler Beeck ranked 40th in the nation, ranked 5th in the Central Region in adjusted scoring average. Beeck was selected Ping All Region, while finishing second in the NSIC with a 72.4 scoring average.


2018-19:  Straight was named the NSIC Men’s Golf Coach of the Year for the second time, Straight led the Warriors to their second NCAA Super Regional for the second time in four seasons.

- Winona State coasted to an impressive NSIC Championship with dominant 26-stroke victory.

- WSU shot a final round of 277, besting the field by 16 strokes that day, for one of its best cumulative scores on record.

- Four Warriors were named to the All-Tournament Team with Ben Jasper earning individual medalist honors.

- Winona State had three golfers named to the All-Conference team led by the NSIC Men’s Golfer of the Year – Michael Schmitz.

- The Warriors went on the NCAA Super Regional where they finished 10th overall – just 10 strokes behind the sixth-place team which stood as the NCAA Championship cut.


2017-18: Straight led Winona State to a second-place finish in the NSIC Conference.

- Warriors were ranked 11th in the Central region, missing Super regionals by one spot.

- Lost to Minnesota State by three strokes in the conference championship.

- Warrior Michael Schmitz qualified for Super Regionals as an Individual. 


2016-17: Straight lead the Warriors to a second-place finish in the NSIC.

- Over the course of the campaign, Winona State owned the lowest scoring average in the conference.

- Three Warriors earned All-Conference honors.


2015-16: Straight was named the NSIC Conference Coach of the year in his first season at the helm.

- The Warriors advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals after a second-place finish at the NSIC Championships.

- Winona State was ranked as high as No. 4 in the Central Region.

- WSU men's golf finished 16th at the Super Regionals.  

- Warrior Michael Schmitz was named a PING All-Region performer in 2016.

2014-15: Straight served as an assistant for the Warriors and helped lead the team to a third-place finish in the NSIC Conference Championship. Straight worked closely on the course with Mitch Holm and Jonathan Lindquist, who finished first and fourth in the event.
