WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State women's basketball team got its first in-game look at its 2014-15 squad Saturday night, defeating the University of Wisconsin-Superior 67-51 in front of 745 fans in McCown Gym.
Tara Roelofs picked up where she left off from a 2013-14 season that landed her on the NSIC All-Freshman Team. The sophomore scored 15 points in the game on 7-of-14 shooting. Her 15 points tied a game high with teammate
Kayla Timmerman, who dropped 15 on 6-of-9 shooting while making all three free throw attempts and snatching six boards in her first action as a Warrior after transferring from the University of Iowa.
Despite a clear Winona State advantage in the stat sheet, the first half was relatively tightly contested and the Warriors held just an eight point lead at the break. WSU shot well from the field in the opening 20 minutes, shooting 52 percent (13-of-25) while holding the Yellowjackets to 25 percent (7-of-28) to take a 33-25 lead into the locker room. The Warriors were balanced, with Roelofs, Timmerman and
Hannah McGlone each contributing six points.
The second half was just as tight for the majority of the game. At the under-10 media timeout, the Warriors held just a 42-39 lead and the Yellowjackets got as close as 45-43. Â From that point, the Warriors went on a 9-3 run to open up a 54-46 and pulled away from there with the first double-digit lead of the game at 60-49 with 2:10 to play.
True freshman
Hannah McGlone contributed 10 points and six rebounds on 5-of-7 shooting, while newcomer
Alexis Foley and
Jenny Weiland each had seven.
Connor Nagle was strong on the defensive side, coming away with four steals to add to her six points.
Winona State travels to Ames, Iowa to take on the Iowa State Cyclones in its final exhibition matchup next Sunday, Nov. 9 before opening up its season on November 14 vs. Crown College at 6 p.m. in McCown Gym.
