WINONA, Minn. – Tara Roelofs scored a game-high 18 points and the Warriors played stellar defensively to earn a 86-41 win over Trinity Christian College (Ill.) Saturday in McCown Gym.
Roelofs hit six-of-nine shots from the field while draining four-of-five 3-pointers and accumulating four assists, three steals and two blocks in an all-around solid performance.
Roelofs had 11 of her 18 points in the first seven minutes, helping the Warriors jump out to a 20-5 lead to start the game. In the opening 10 minutes, the Warriors shot 50 percent while holding the Trolls to just 13 percent.
Emily Wirth was 3-of-4 in the first half while scoring eight points off the bench as WSU built a 39-15 halftime lead while its strong defense held Trinity Christian to just 18 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes.
The Trolls didn't fare much better in the second half, making just 9-of-22 shots (27.3 percent).
Allison Hocking drilled a pair of second-half three pointers to score a career-high eight points as the Warriors steadily increased their lead to the eventual 86-41 final.
WSU outrebounded its opponent 51 to 33 while freshman Hannah McGlone grabbed a game-high nine boards to add to her eight points. Jenny Weiland grabbed eight rebounds while scoring nine points.
Wirth finished as the team's second-leading scorer with a career-high 13 points and five rebounds while Kayla Timmerman chipped in 12 points and six rebounds.
The Warriors were dialed in from long range, sinking 10 of its 17 attempts (59 percent) from beyond the arc while shooting 54 percent from the floor overall.
Winona State (2-0) hits the road next Saturday for a nonconference road game at Wisconsin-Eau Claire with opening tap scheduled for 3 p.m.
