Warriors Hang On To Beat UW-Eau Claire 62-57

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The Winona State women's basketball team put together a strong first half, then had to rally to post a 62-57 nonconference road victory over Wisconsin-Eau Claire Saturday afternoon at Zorn Arena.

It was the tale of two halves for both teams as WSU shot 52 percent compared to just 23 percent for the Blugolds in the opening 20 minutes, however the Warriors made just 28 percent of its shots in the second half while UWEC made 44 percent of its own.

With the Warriors controlling a 17-16 lead early on, Jenny Weiland and Kayla Timmerman sparked an 8-0 run to open up a 25-16 advantage. The Warriors capped off the first half with a 3-pointer by Kali Hackmann to head into the locker room up by 14, 37-23.

Foley scored the first three points of the second half as the Warriors extended their lead to the largest of the game at 40-23 with 19:05 to play, but the Warriors would go ice cold from that point as the Blugolds went on a 19-0 run spanning 10 and a half minutes as UW-Eau Claire took a brief 42-40 lead. Emily Wirth finally ended the drought with a pair of free throws with 8:38 to play to tie the game at 42-42.

It was a back-and-forth battle from there, as the teams traded leads to the end. The Blugolds opened up a four-point lead when Abby Midtlein hit a 3-pointer with 3:51 to make it 55-51, but Connor Nagle responded with one of her own to close it to 55-54. Hackmann followed with another 3-pointer to put WSU up 57-55 and would cling to the lead the rest of the way to a 62-57 win.

Junior Alexis Foley scored a team-high 13 points with four assists and a pair of steals to lead the Warriors as the only scorer in double figures. Hackmann sank three of her four 3-pointers to finish with nine points, as did Kayla Timmerman. Tara Roelofs scored eight points while dishing out four assists.
