WINONA, Minn. –
Kati Baker scored in the 20th minute and that's all the Winona State soccer team would need to post a 1-0 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in the opening round of the NSIC/US Bank Soccer Tournament Wednesday night at a rain-soaked Warrior Stadium.
Baker, thanks to feeds from
Taylor Zehren and
Kelsey Foss, followed the ball past SMSU goalkeeper Brienna Dehkes and was able to put it in a wide open net for the game's lone goal.
The Winona State defense got back on track, recording its 10th shutout of the season. Goalkeeper
Rachel Oleson stopped all seven shots she faced in the match.
The Warriors took 17 shots in the match while putting nine on goal. SMSU, meanwhile, attempted 12 shots.
Kenzie Rose took a team-high four shots in the game while posting a match-high three on goal. Baker took three shots, while Zehren and
Nicole Sames each had two. 10 different Warriors attempted at least one shot.
Winona State (14-4-1) advances to the semifinals of the NSIC/US Bank Soccer Tournament to be played Friday in Mankato, Minn. The Warriors will square off at 11 a.m. against seventh-seeded Minnesota Duluth, which upset No. 2 seed Augustana 1-0. The victor will play the winner of the Minnesota State vs. Upper Iowa match on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Mankato.
