Foley's 27 Points Fuels Warriors To 79-55 Win At SMSU

MARSHALL, Minn. – Junior Alexis Foley scored a career-high 27 points as the Winona State women's basketball team cruised to a 79-55 victory over Southwest Minnesota State Friday night at the R/A Facility in Marshall.

After a Mustang 3-point basket to open the game, Foley converted on an and-one at the other end to tie it at 3-3. From there, the Warriors went on a 22-1 run to lead 22-4 with 12:39 to play in the first half and never looked back.

By the nine minute mark, the Warriors had increased their lead to 31-10 and Foley had already racked up a career-high 14 points and had three and-1 opportunities while slicing through the Mustang defense.

Foley finished the half with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting along with three assists and three steals in just 10 minutes of action to push the Warriors to a 42-24 lead at the break. Kayla Timmerman contributed eight points while Connor Nagle added six points with three steals.

As a team, WSU shot 59 percent from the field (17-of-29) in the opening 20 minutes, while Southwest Minnesota State shot just 33 percent (9-of-27). The Warriors also outrebounded SMSU 19-14.

The Warriors only heated up in the second half, shooting 65 percent (17-of-26) while outscoring the Mustangs 37-31 to run away with the 79-55 victory. Foley continued to dominate the stat sheet, scoring 11 more points in the second half to finish with her game-high 27 points, along with a game-high five assists, three steals, three rebounds and a block while also going 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

Connor Nagle picked up five steals and a game-high six rebounds to go with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Kayla Timmerman also had a strong night, matching her career-high 14 points to go with five rebounds.

As a team, the Warriors shot 62 percent (34-of-55) for the game while holding the Mustangs to just 32 percent (18-of-57). WSU outrebounded SMSU 38-29 and the Warriors were 5-of-9 from long range while SMSU made just seven of their 25 attempts from long distance.

Winona State (6-0, 2-0 NSIC) next heads to Sioux Falls Saturday for a 4 p.m. tipoff against the Cougars from the Stewart Center.
