WAYNE, Neb. – The Winona State women's basketball team dropped its fourth straight road game, falling to Wayne State 64-44 on Saturday in Rice Auditorium.
Â
The Warriors' road woes in Wayne continued, as the team was held to a season-low 44 points, committed a season-high 24 turnovers and were also held to just 36 percent shooting from the field.
Â
It appeared that Winona State was going to compete early on against the Wildcats. Much like the Augustana game the night before, the Warriors got off to a hot start from the perimeter as Connor Nagle and Alexis Foley each drained threes in the early going to give WSU a 6-2 advantage 3:13 into the first half.
Â
However, the Wildcats fought back and took the lead and would maintain it for much of the first half.
Still, it appeared Winona State was going to keep it close, as they never let the Wildcats get more than a six-point lead over the ensuing 14 minutes.
Â
Foley knocked down a layup to get the Warriors to within three at 20-17 with 3:27 to go in the first half.
Â
However, the Warriors were victimized by another huge run for the second night in a row as things unraveled quickly over the next three and a half minutes.
Wayne State went on a 16-0 run to end the first half to lead Winona State 36-17 at halftime. It was a stretch where the Warriors went 0-for-3 from the field and committed three turnovers while unable to find an answer for Wayne State on the defensive end.
Â
The Warriors offensive woes continued in the second half, as they struggled to find an answer for the Wildcats' zone defense.
Â
Through the first fifteen minutes of the second half, Wayne State was able to stretch the lead to 30 by outscoring Winona State 24-13 during that stretch to make it 60-30.
Â
The Warriors did go on an 11-0 run to cut the Wayne State lead to 60-41 with 2:30 to go, a stretch that included two Kayla Timmerman three-pointers, her first three-pointers of the season.
However, time ran out for the Warriors to make any sort of run at the Wildcats and Wayne State came away with the victory.
Â
Timmerman was the only Warrior to crack into double-figures with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Still, Timmerman did not score her first point until the 10:13 mark in the second half and ended up scoring 12 of the team's last 20 points in the game.
Â
Nagle scored eight points and led the Warriors in rebounds with nine, and Foley added eight for WSU as well.
Winona State (13-5, 9-5 NSIC) will look to remain unbeaten at home next weekend when it taeks on Bemidji State at 6 p.m. on Friday night and Minnesota Crookston at 4 p.m. on Saturday in McCown Gymnasium.
