Nelson Becomes All-Time Leading Passer In 35-21 Loss To Peacocks

WINONA, Minn. – Junior quarterback Jack Nelson became the Winona State football team's all-time leading passer but the Warriors fell to Upper Iowa Saturday afternoon at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.

Nelson finished the day 33-for-57 for 361 yards and a touchdown. The signal-caller now has 7,809 career passing yards, which moves him past WSU Hall of Famer Jake Goettl for the most in WSU career history.

Upper Iowa struck first when quarterback Dimitri Morales ran it in from two yards out for the first of his two rushing scores on the day and a 7-0 lead with 5:40 to play in the first quarter.

The Warriors countered quickly just over two minutes later when Nelson found Cameron Johnson for an 11-yard touchdown pass to even the score.

But the Peacocks scored the next three touchdowns and had a 28-7 lead by the midway point of the second quarter.

A Paul Preston one-yard rushing touchdown brought it to 28-14 at halftime and the junior running back had 117 yards on 17 carries in the first half.

Preston had an eight-yard run scoring run early in the third quarter to cut the lead to 28-21, but finished the second half with just six net yards on five carries.

The final score of the game came later in the third quarter when Morales found Trey MacTaggart for an 11-yard touchdown to bring the game to 35-21 and the Warriors were unable to find the end zone again.

Johnson led the Warriors with a career-high 126 yards on eight catches with a touchdown. Josh Mikes added seven catches for 94 yards, while May had six grabs for 51 yards.

Senior linebacker Collin Corcoran moved into a tie for eighth on the career sacks chart with 17.5 after he picked up one in the game. Corcoran also led WSU with 12 tackles, including two for loss. Mike Imperiale added nine tackles and a forced fumble.

Winona State (3-4, 1-2 NSIC South) heads back on the road next Saturday to face No. 1 Minnesota State at 1 p.m. at Blakeslee Stadium in Mankato.
