WINONA, Minn. – The No. 25 Winona State volleyball team used another strong hitting performance to cruise past Minnesota Crookston 3-0 Friday night in front of 549 fans in McCown Gymnasium.
The Warriors cruised to their fourth straight sweep with little trouble, outhitting the Golden Eagles .358 to .000 and racking up 50 kills compared to just 17 for UMC.
Taylor Goar led all players with 11 kills, while Maria Wrage turned in a terrific performance, notching her second career double-digit kill effort with 10 while hitting a strong .533.
McKenna Larsen had the best hitting percentage of the match, hitting .636 with seven kills, eight digs and a match-high 35 assists. Lauren Kudronowicz also was efficient, tallying nine kills while hitting .571.
The Warriors wasted little time jumping out to a first set lead, as a Goar kill made it 6-2 before a 7-1 run capped off by a Kudronowicz kill put the Warriors up 16-7. Two more key Goar kills gave the Warriors a lead of 20-10 before the latter finished off the Golden Eagles for a 25-18 win. The Warriors hit .256 while the Golden Eagles hit an even .000.
The Golden Eagles hung with WSU for a while in the second set, grabbing an early 5-4 lead and later trailing by just two at 13-11. But the Warriors responded with a 5-0 run to extend the lead to 18-11 and had no problem claiming the 25-17 victory and the 2-0 match lead.
The Warriors ran away with game three, sparked by 10 straight points to bring a 10-8 lead to a 20-8 lead. Only a Summer Larson service error prevented the run from growing larger, as WSU went on to take 15 of the final 16 points to win the set 25-9.
Winona State (13-7, 7-6 NSIC) returns to McCown Gym Saturday for a 4 p.m. match against Bemidji State.
