DULUTH, Minn. – The No. 24 Winona State volleyball team saw its five match winning streak come to an end with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-16) loss at No. 9 Minnesota Duluth Friday night in Romano Gym in Duluth.
A McKenna Larsen kill gave WSU an 11-6 lead in the opening set, but UMD answered with a 10-1 run to move ahead 16-12 and never looked back in a 25-17 win.
After dropping the first set, the Warriors had their best chance to take a set from the Bulldogs in the second. WSU jumped out to another 11-6 lead and this time held on longer as a Maria Wrage kill gave the Warriors a 20-17 lead. But again it was a late UMD run, using an 8-2 spurt to come back and take the 25-22 win. WSU hit .273 in the set – it's best of the match – while UMD hit .333, its worst.
The Warriors hit .000 in the final set as UMD clinched it with a 25-16 win.
Danielle Rampart led the Warriors with eight kills while hitting .304 with a team-high 10 digs.
Taylor Goar and Maria Wrage each had six kills, with Wrage's .500 hitting percentage leading the team.
No. 24 Winona State (14-8, 8-7 NSIC) travels to St. Cloud State Saturday for a 4 p.m. matchup with St. Cloud State at 4 p.m.Â
