Warriors Brush Away Academy of Art, 77-55

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Winona State women's basketball team shot 50 percent from the floor to surge past Academy of Art Saturday night at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Senior point guard Alexis Foley led the Warriors for the second straight day, scoring a game-high 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting while sinking 3-of-5 shots from behind the arc and dishing out three assists.

Junior Tara Roelofs added 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting while grabbing a game-best seven rebounds.

As a team, the Warriors 24-of-48 shots and hit seven of their 17 3-point attempts. But the Warriors were most effective from the charity stripe, hitting 22-of-24 free throws while the Urban Knights made just 5 of 10.

Academy of Art gave the Warriors some trouble in the opening quarter. Foley got off to another hot start, scoring seven points to build an 11-8 lead, but the Urban Knights wound up with a 17-15 lead at the end of one.

The Warriors, however, began to take over in the second quarter, outscoring AAU 18-8 to take a 33-25 lead into the locker room.

WSU didn't let up in the third quarter, outscoring Academy of Art by 10 again to hold a commanding 58-40 lead at the end of three quarters before a 19-15 advantage in the fourth quarter led to the 77-55 final.

In all, four Warriors scored in double figures. Joining Foley and Roelofs were Connor Nagle – who was 4-for-10 with 11 points on the strength of three 3-pointers – and Kayla Timmerman, who was 3-for-5 from the field and made 5-of-6 free throws.

Winona State (2-0) concludes the CCA Division II Tip-Off Classic Sunday morning with an 11 a.m. game against New York Institute of Technology at the Torodome in Carson, California.
