WINONA, Minn. – Connor Nagle buried seven 3-pointers and led all scorers to lead the No. 16 Winona State women's basketball team to a 90-68 win over crosstown Saint Mary's Saturday night in front of 917 fans in McCown Gymnasium.
Nagle was on fire early on, drilling four 3-pointers in the first four and half minutes of the game to build the Warriors a 19-8 lead midway through the first quarter.
Her fifth 3-pointer came early in the second quarter to extend WSU's lead to 34-19 and a sixth with 5:28 to play in the first half as WSU led 42-28. But the Cardinals ended the half on a 13-2 run to trail by just three, 44-41, at the break.
A 3-pointer from SMU'S Alexa Huisman briefly brought the Cardinals even with the Warriors to start the third quarter, but WSU answered with a 10-4 run to pull ahead 54-48 midway through the third. After SMU got it back to 59-55, an 11-0 run by the Warriors put the game out of reach at 70-55. WSU built its biggest lead of 25 on a pair of Emily Wirth free throws before settling for the 90-68 win.
Nagle finished with a game-high 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting – and 7-of-10 from 3-point range – along with nine rebounds and four assists.
Tara Roelofs added 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting, while Kayla Timmerman was 5-of-10 with 12 points and nine rebounds.
The Warriors shot 46 percent, but 55 percent from 3-point range – while Saint Mary's finished at 40 percent from the field.
