WINONA, Minn. – The No. 9 Winona State women's basketball team held Upper Iowa to NSIC season lows for points and shooting percentage in a 69-31 drubbing Saturday afternoon in McCown Gymnasium.
In a game that was even more lopsided than the final score indicated, WSU – which entered the game with the second-best scoring margin in Division II (27.6) - used stifling defense, allowing a poor-shooting Peacock squad to make just 12-of-62 shots from the field (19 percent). That's the worst shooting performance from an NSIC team this season. The 31 points also marks the fewest scored against an NSIC team this year.
The Warriors extended the program's longest winning streak to 13 games with a result that was never in doubt. WSU jumped all over the Peacocks in the first quarter, outscoring its opponent 22-5. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Tara Roelofs and Connor Nagle put WSU up 10-2 with 6:23 to play. UIU's Sam Ofstad followed up with a 3-pointer of her own, but that's all the Peacocks would score as WSU went on a 12-0 run bookended by triples from Jenny Tuttle and Roelofs to jump out to a 22-5 lead at the first period buzzer.
The second quarter was more evenly played with the Warriors outscoring UIU by just two, 15-13. Back-to-back Peacock 3-pointers briefly cut the lead to 10 at 26-16 midway through the quarter, but WSU responded with an 11-2 run to close the half and take a 37-18 lead into the break.
Winona State dominated the third quarter to put the game away, as the Peacocks scored just one point and were 0-of-14 from the field as WSU used a 17-1 advantage to take a 54-19 lead.
WSU was extremely balanced offensively, as 12 Warriors scored and 11 played at least 10 minutes. Roelofs led the scoring with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting with a a pair of 3-pointers, while Kayla Timmerman added 10 points, six rebounds, four blocks and two steals.
Alexis Foley added eight points while picking up five steals and dishing out three assists with four rebounds.
No. 9 Winona State (13-0, 6-0 NSIC) returns to McCown Gym after the holiday break when it hosts Northern State and MSU Moorhead on Saturday, January 2 and Sunday, January 3.
