WINONA, Minn. – The No. 9 Winona State women's basketball team's program record 13-game winning streak came to an end Saturday, falling to Northern State 60-55 in a defensive battle in front of 1,214 fans in McCown Gymnasium.
The tandem of Alexis Foley and Kayla Timmerman combined for 42 of WSU's 55 points, while the Warriors managed just one point from their bench. Foley finished with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-18 shooting and a 7-of-8 effort from the charity stripe. Timmerman added 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting with five rebounds and three steals and tied a career-best six blocks for the fifth time as a Warrior.
The Warriors struggled on the offensive glass, as the Wolves controlled a 44-30 edge overall 13-7 on the offensive end.
Still, the game was a typical game between the two teams, and despite the Wolves leading the majority of the game, the Warriors had chances late to pull out the victory.
Northern State held the largest lead of the game with a nine-point cushion with 8:14 to play in the fourth quarter. Timmerman followed with her final points of the game, a big 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 53-47. Soon after, Foley converted a 3-point play and the Warriors were within three at 53-50 with 5:46 left in the game. Hannah McGlone would cut the NSU lead to two, 55-53, on a free throw with less than three minutes to play and WSU got within two again on a pair of Foley free throws with 24 seconds left, but the Warriors were unable to pull even as the Wolves iced it at the line.
The Warriors opened the game with an early 7-4 lead thanks to a deep 3-pointer from Timmerman, but the Wolves answered with a 10-1 run prompting a WSU timeout. Timmerman hit another basket late in the first quarter for her ninth point and Winona State trailed 14-12 after one period.
Timmerman continued her impressive first half with a steal that lead to a Foley breakaway 3-point play to knot the score at 19-19 with 6:58 left in the half, but a 7-0 NSU spurt brought the lead back to 26-19. Connor Nagle hit a 3-point basket to cut it to 28-27 and a Foley layup briefly put the Warriors back in front 30-28 to cap a 9-0 run with 1:29 to play, but Northern State headed to the locker room with a 32-30 advantage and WSU trailed at halftime for the first time this season.
Northern State shot 41.8 percent for the game while holding WSU to just 34.5 percent and WSU dished out a season low six assists. Jenny Weiland led the Warriors with seven rebounds.
Winona State (13-1, 6-1 NSIC) looks to rebound Sunday when it hosts MSU Moorhead for a 2 p.m. matinee in McCown Gym.
