WINONA, Minn. – The No. 10 Winona State women's basketball team held Southwest Minnesota State to just 13 first half points to cruise to an 81-46 win Friday night in front of 864 fans in McCown Gym.
The Warriors got up big early and never looked back, opening up a 16-2 lead after Tara Roelofs, Alexis Foley and Kayla Timmerman each hit a 3-pointer. By the time Roelofs hit her second 3-point shot with 1:19 to play in the first quarter, WSU had increased its lead to 21-4 and the Warriors led 21-6 at the end of one.
Foley's second 3-pointer early in the second quarter pushed the lead to 28-6 and Timmerman's long two-pointer brought the lead to what would be the largest of the half at 28 points, 36-8, with 3:20 to play. SMSU would go on a mini 5-0 spurt to end the half to make it 36-13 at the break. The Warriors held the Mustangs to just 21 percent shooting (6-of-29) in the first half and 0-of-9 from 3-point range. WSU, meanwhile, shot 47 percent (14-of-30) and hit 5-of-11 3-pointers.
A pair of Mustang free throws to open the second half brought their run to 7-0, their largest of the game, but the 21 point deficit is as close as SMSU would come as free throws from Foley pushed the lead to 30 points at 52-22. WSU's lead grew as large as 37 points on an Emily Passint layup with two minutes to play to put WSU up 41-78 before settling for the 81-46 victory. SMSU shot better in the second half at 36 percent, but so did the Warriors, who increased their perecentage to 52 percent.
Foley led the Warriors with a game-high 20 points on an efficient 7-of-8 shooting including a perfect 3-of-3 from long range.
Roelofs added 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers. Timmerman was the third Warrior to finish in double figures, coming up just shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds with four blocks.
Connor Nagle was held scoreless but dished out a game-high six assists and had three steals.
No. 10 Winona State (9-0, 2-0 NSIC), off to its best start in program history, is back in action Saturday when it hosts fellow unbeaten Sioux Falls (8-0, 2-0 NSIC) at 4 p.m. in McCown Gym.
