BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Winona State baseball team is still searching for its first victory of the season after dropping a doubleheader to Southwest Baptist by scores of 7-4 and 3-2 Saturday in Bolivar, Mo.
Â
The first game got off to a slow start as SBU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. However, the Warriors rallied in the fourth inning by putting up three runs. Paul Mutch would reach base on an error that would score another run and Nathan Krause hit a double to drive in the third run of the inning to give WSU a 3-1 lead.
Â
Winona State's lead would not last long as WSU pitcher Chase Blazier ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth. After a walk and two flyouts, the Bearcats managed three straight hits to tie the game up at 3-3 and then an error allowed for the Bearcats to jump ahead 4-3.
Â
The Warriors would manage to tie the game up again in the top of the fifth when Travis Evanson drove in Andrew Geslinger to make it a 4-4 game.
Â
Southwest Baptist would answer again in the bottom of the fifth with two RBI singles to take a 6-4 lead and would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI groundout to make it a 7-4 game.
Â
Winona State only managed to four runs on six hits with two errors as a team as Southwest Baptist managed seven runs on 10 hits on two errors.
Â
Travis Evanson led the Warriors by going 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
Â
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Warriors jumped out early and held a lead for most of the game, but a run in the bottom of the ninth doomed the Warriors in a 3-2 loss.
Â
Winona State managed to get out to an early 2-0 start in the top of the first. Kipp Youngquist produced an RBI single that drove in Paul Mutch and Taylor Field would score from third on an error.
Â
The Warriors held a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth as a bases loaded walk scored one run and a fielder's choice out tied the game at 2-2.
Â
Both teams had a tough time scoring until the Bearcats got some late-game heroics as an RBI double resulted in a walk-off winner for Southwest Baptist to give them the 3-2 victory.
Â
Hayden Krimmer pitched five solids innings for the Warriors, giving up no earned runs and just four hits while giving up three walks and striking out four.
Â
The Warriors' offense struggled, scoring just two unearned runs on five hits as a team.
Â
Winona State, which falls to 0-6 on the year, will have to wait longer than anticipated for another crack at the win column, as Sunday's doubleheader with Wisconsin-Parkside has been canceled due to poor weather conditions. WSU's next scheduled game is not until March 9, when it plays the first of six games on its Florida road swing.
