Dominant Pitching, Kullmann's Walkoff Highlight Shutout Wins

CLERMONT, Fla. – Ashley Walker and Hanna Lythberg each turned in fantastic performances in the circle, throwing complete game shutouts to lead the No. 12 Winona State softball team to wins over California (Pa.) and Tiffin Thursday in Florida.

The Warriors won the opener 7-0 before Jessica Kullmann broke a scoreless tie with a walkoff ninth inning single for a 1-0 victory in game two.

Walker took to the circle for game one, shutting down the Vulcans while pitching all seven innings, striking out six, scattering five hits and giving up no runs. With the victory, Walker improved to 6-0 on the season.

Morgan Lintz singled to center field for an RBI in the first inning to give WSU an early lead and the Warriors added a second run the next inning with an inside the park home run from Natalie Kalmes to take a 2-0 advantage.

That score would hold until the sixth when WSU came through with four more insurance runs. Kalmes produced another RBI, this time on a single to left field. Later in the inning Jamee Schleis scored on a fielding error. Walker then made the lead more comfortable for herself with a 2 RBI single to left for a 6-0 lead. The Warriors would add one more in the seventh on a Shannon Nelson single to make it a 7-0 final.

Kalmes led WSU in game one with three hits, while Lexi Perez added a pair.

Hanna Lythberg picked up right where Walker left off in the nightcap, prevailing in a pitchers' duel in which neither starter allowed a run to cross the plate until the ninth inning. Lythberg pitched all nine innings, giving up just six hits while fanning seven Tiffin batters and walking just one. The junior's ERA on the season lowered to a stellar 0.71 on the season as she improved to 7-1 in the circle.

WSU produced just four hits in the game compared to six for Tiffin, but WSU got the one that counted. With the international tiebreaker rule in place beginning with the eighth inning, the Warriors took advantage of it the following inning as Walker was placed on the second to begin the bottom half of the ninth. After Lintz executed a sacrifice but to move Walker to third, the senior Kullmann provided the heroics with a base hit to center to score Walker and escape with the win.

Winona State (15-2) wraps up its 10-game Florida swing on Friday with a pair of games against the same Tiffin squad at 8 a.m. (CDT) followed by a final tilt with Ohio Dominican – who the Warriors beat 7-2 in its first Florida game – at 10 a.m.
