CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 12 Winona State softball split a pair of matchups on its final day in Florida, suffering a 5-2 setback to Tiffin before rebounding for a 5-1 victory over Ohio Dominican.
The Warriors, playing Tiffin for the second time in less than 24 hours, struggled to get their offense going after needing nine innings to post a win over the Dragons the first time around. Tiffin finally broke through against WSU in the fourth inning with three runs, but WSU answered back with two runs in the fifth as Ashley Walker pounded an RBI double to center field to score Reed Karsten and Lintz followed up with an RBI single to plate Walker. That's as close as WSU would get, as Tiffin scored a pair of unearned runs in the seventh to claim the 5-2 win.
Walker (6-1) gave up 11 hits and three earned runs while striking out three in seven innings.
The Warriors used a late rally to down the Panthers in game two. WSU found itself down 1-0 after three and a half innings, but WSU strung together a four-run inning in the bottom of the fourth to move ahead. Karsten got the Warriors on the board with a with an RBI single to tie the game, then Walker singled through the left side for an RBI before Morgan Lintz hit a 2 RBI double to right field to put WSU up 4-1. Lintz then recorded another RBI with a single to left field in the sixth inning as WSU earned the 5-1 win.
Hanna Lythberg improved to 8-1 on the season, going the distance while giving up six hits and just one earned run while striking out three and walking none.
Winona State (16-3) takes to the road again next weekend, traveling to St. Joseph, Mo. for six in-region games against MIAA opponents.
