ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – After a pair of disappointing losses Friday, the No. 14 Winona State softball team responded with a pair of important in-region victories, beating Northwest Missouri State 3-2 before topping Pittsburg State 7-3 Saturday in St. Joseph, Mo.
Senior Morgan Lintz was the hero of game one, responsible for all three of the Warriors' runs. Lintz scored a pair of runs early with a 2 RBI single to score McKenna Larsen and Ashley Walker in the bottom of the first against the Bearcats.
Walker was strong in the circle early, giving up just two hits throughout four scoreless innings as WSU headed into the fifth up 2-0. But WSU was destined for another tough battle as Northwest would tie it up after a home run in the fifth and an RBI single in the sixth.
Lintz again came up big, providing the game-winning home run to center field on a 3-1 pitch to give the Warriors a 3-2 lead and eventual win as Walker closed the door with a perfect seventh inning.
The Warriors returned to the diamond to cruise to a 7-3 victory in the nightcap. The final score was perhaps closer than the game would indicate, after WSU built a 7-0 lead through six innings before Pitt State fought back with three in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as WSU earned its second victory of the day.
Natalie Kalmes scored first with a solo home run to left field in the third inning. Kalmes then added another RBI in the fourth with a double to center field to score Allyson O'Herron, who singled earlier in the inning as WSU took a 3-0 lead.
The Warriors then broke through for four runs in the sixth as freshman Jamee Schleis coaxed a bases-loaded walk before Reed Karsten cleared the bases with a 3 RBI triple to open up a 7-0 lead and more than enough run support for Hanna Lythberg (9-2), who gave up six hits and three earned runs while also striking out six while pitching the complete game.
Winona State (18-5) closes out the Apple Market Classic Sunday with a pair of games against Emporia State and host Missouri Western at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in St. Joseph.
