Warrior Softball Earns DH Sweep Of Bemidji State 5-1, 8-0

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Winona State softball team concluded a 4-0 start to NSIC play with a pair of victories over Bemidji State Sunday afternoon in Bemidji.

The Warriors used a late rally in the opener to post a 5-1 victory before cruising to an 8-0 win in game two.

WSU found itself down 1-0 after four innings in game one thanks to a solo home run for Bemidji State. But the Warriors would get on the board in the fifth when a Reed Karsten single up the middle plated Shannon Nelson and Cydnei Gunderson to take a 2-1 lead.

The Warriors then added some insurance in the seventh with three runs. The first came from Karsten again, this time on an RBI double to center field. Karsten then scored on a bunt single by Morgan Lintz and McKenna Larsen followed up with an RBI flyout to bring the score to 5-1.

Ashley Walker earned the victory in the circle with a complete game, allowing just one earned run while striking out five Beaver batters.

The nightcap was all Warriors, as Hanna Lythberg was dominant in the circle, throwing a complete game five-hit shutout along with six strikeouts to improve to 11-3 on the season.

Larsen got the offense going for the Warriors with an RBI double in the second inning to score Lintz. Larsen then scored when Natalie Kalmes drove her home with a single to right field. Kalmes then scored on a double steal to open up an early 3-0 lead.

WSU added another run in the following inning when Lintz produced an RBI with a fielder's choice to make it 4-0, and WSU added another pair of runs in the fifth when Karsten scored on a wild pitch and McKenna Larsen recorded an RBI flyout.

Larsen added another RBI in the seventh, as did Evie Schaller to make it an 8-0 final.

Winona State (22-7, 4-0 NSIC) returns to action on Tuesday for a doubleheader at Wayne State with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. in Wayne, Neb. WSU then prepares for its home opener on Friday against Minnesota Duluth in Winona.
