CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 15 Winona State softball team stuck to its winning ways Monday, claiming a pair of victories over Northwood (Mich.) and Ferris State.
The Warriors won the opener 6-2 while taking care of Ferris State 7-2 in game two. WSU broke out its bats to the tune of 21 hits in the pair of games while allowing just eight hits combined from the two opponents.
In the opener against Northwood, the Warriors struck first in the top of the first as Jessica Kullmann produced an RBI groundout to score Lexi Perez. Kullmann extended the WSU lead in the fourth inning with a solo shot to center field – her second home run of the season and first of two on the day – to put the Warriors up 4-0. Later in the inning, Reed Karsten brought home a pair of runners with a single through the right side to put WSU up 4-0.
WSU made it 6-0 in the seventh inning when Perez scored on a wild pitch and Morgan Lintz plated Ashley Walker with a sacrifice fly. Northwood would get a pair of runners home in the bottom of the seventh but it wasn't enough as the Warriors claimed a 6-2 win.
Walker earned the victory for the Warriors in the circle, improving to a perfect 5-0 on the season after scattering five hits and giving up just two runs while striking out four.
The Warriors used the long ball three times in the nightcap as WSU claimed the 7-2 win. Kullmann opened the scoring with her second home run of the day – this time a two-run shot to left field – to plate Lintz and take a 2-0 lead. Karsten then hit her first home run of the season and third of her career in the bottom of the third to put WSU out front 3-0.
Lintz got in on the home run action in the fifth inning. After Walker contributed an RBI single, Lintz later hit a two-run home run to center field to plate Walker and put the Warriors out front by a comfortable 6-0 margin.
Despite a sloppy final few innings – the Warriors committed four errors in the game – WSU was able to put away the Bulldogs 7-2 after Karsten produced another RBI single in the top of the seventh.
Hanna Lythberg was once again dominant on the amound, pitching a complete game while giving up just three runs and no earned runs while striking out eight. Lythberg – who improves to 6-1 on the season – has an ERA of 0.88 with 37 strikeouts on the season while giving up only 10 walks and 20 hits.
Winona State (12-1) is back in action Tuesday when it takes on Millersville and Maryville University at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively, in Clermont, Fla.
