ST. PAUL, Minn. – Freshman pitcher
Mitchell Stalsberg followed up his no-hitter with another strong outing and got some help from two home runs by senior first baseman
Travis Evanson in an 11-1 win over Concordia-St. Paul in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Â
Winona State (19-24, 17-13 NSIC) also got a couple home runs in the first game, but fell just short 3-2 in the first game of the doubleheader.
Â
In that first game,
Tyler Nehring got the scoring going right off the bat in the top of the first with a solo home run to right field to take a 1-0 lead. It was Nehring's seventh home run of the season and his second in the four game series.
Â
The Golden Bears took the lead away in the fourth inning on two RBI singles off of Warrior pitcher
Lucas Crimmins to take a 2-1 lead. Concordia-St. Paul got one more run in the sixth inning on a wild pitch by relief pitcher
Josh Nielsen to make it a 3-1 game.
Â
In the top of the seventh, Winona State rallied on a solo home run by catcher
Nathan Krause to left field to cut the deficit to 3-2. However, that was all the Warriors could muster in the final frame and dropped the opening game to the Golden Bears.
Â
Crimmins took the loss for WSU, dropping to 2-4 on the season after pitching five innings and giving up two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six.
Â
Krause led the Warrior bats going 1-for-2 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored. Nehring also contributed with a 1-for-3 game with a home run, RBI, and a run scored.
Â
While Winona State struggled to produce runs in the first game, it was the exact opposite in the second game as the Warriors managed to produce 11 runs on 15 hits.
Â
In the first inning, the Warriors jumped up 3-0 on one swing of the bat as Evanson drove a three-run blast to left field to score Geislinger and Nehring.
Â
Concordia-St. Paul got a run back in the bottom of the frame on back-to-back hits to make it 3-1, but that would be the closest the Golden Bears would keep it the entire game.
Â
Evanson added two more runs in the third inning on another home run, this time a two-run blast to left field with
Jesus Cazares on base to make it a 5-1 lead. The drive was Evanson's 11th home run of the season.
Â
Cazares made it 6-1 in the next frame on an RBI double to center field, scoring
Michael Hommes from third.
Â
In the sixth inning, Cazares kept adding insurance runs, this time driving an RBI double to left center to score Geislinger to make it 7-1. Two batters later,
Mitchell Heid drove a sacrifice fly to deep center field, scoring Nehring from third to stretch the lead to 8-1.
Â
Two at-bats later,
Mitch Voter made it 10-1 on a two RBI double to right field to drive in his first runs of the game.
Â
The Warriors added one more in the seventh for good measure on a throwing error on a Geislinger sacrifice bunt that scored Hommes to make it an 11-1 lead.
Â
Voter went from designated hitter to pitcher in the seventh inning to close out the game after Stalsberg pitched six solid innings.
Â
Stalsberg picked up the victory, improving to 3-2 after he gave up just one earned run on six hits and four walks while striking out eight batters.
Â
Evanson had an outstanding game from the plate, going 2-for-3 with two home runs, five RBIs, and two runs scored and drew two walks. Cazares also had a great day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Â
Winona State will return home for their final home games of the season for a weekday doubleheader. The Warriors will take on Upper Iowa on Wednesday with a 1:30 p.m. first pitch at Loughrey Field.
