BISMARCK, N.D. – Kyle Bauman notched his third double-double of the season to lead the Winona State men's basketball team to a 64-54 victory over the University of Mary Friday night at the McDowell Activity Center in Bismarck.
Bauman snagged a career-high 14 rebounds and scored a game-high 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting along with two blocks and an assist in 33 minutes of work.
Neither team's offense hit shots with much success throughout the game, as the Warriors finished 23-of-58 (39.7 percent), but WSU's tough defense held the Marauders to just 19-of-66 (28.8 percent).
The two squads especially struggled early on, as Bauman finally got the Warriors on the board six minutes into the game with a 3-pointer to take a 3-2 lead. Charlie Koontz hit a layup with 6:21 to play in the first half that put the Warriors up by 7, 17-10, but a late run from the Marauders saw the low-scoring first half end with the Warriors holding a 22-20 lead.
Bauman hit his second 3-pointer of the game early on in the second half to up WSU's lead to 30-26, then three straight jumpers from the big man stretched the Warrior lead to 39-31 with 13:15 to play as Bauman scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half.
A tip-in from Mark Blacklock put WSU up double digits for the first time at 50-39 with 8:30 to play and led comfortably the rest of the way. Conrad Masberg hit a 3-pointer to put the Warriors up by a game-high 14 points with 4:26 to play and the Warriors earned the 64-54 over a team receiving votes in the NABC Top 25 Poll.
Isaiah Gray added 13 points and eight rebounds with three assists
Winona State (7-8, 6-5 NSIC) returns to action Saturday when it battles Minot State at 6 p.m. in Minot, North Dakota.
