SAN JUAN, P.R. - The Winona State (1-1) Women's Basketball team faced the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez (UPRM), its second opponent on their trip to Puerto Rico and came away with a 72-36 win.

The University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez was able to start with a 5-0 run until
Kayla Timmerman got the Warriors on the board with a bucket. The Warriors would then go on a 9-0 run of their own to make the score 9-5 with just under five minutes left in the first quarter. With help from Timmerman,
Tara Roelofs and
MaKena Panning the Warriors would hold a 20-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, five Warriors put points on the scoreboard. Defensively
Gabie Doud added a block and
Kali Hackmann created a turnover. The Warriors only gave up four points in the second quarter and held a 31-15 lead at the half.

Liz Evenocheck opened the second half with a 3-pointer with an assist from
Jenny Tuttle. The Warriors would make eight free throws in the third quarter and outscore UPRMÂ 24-12 to push their lead to 55-27 and end the quarter with a 28 point lead.

Another quarter of good defensive play from the Warriors helped them secure the victory. The Warriors limited UPRMÂ to just nine points while adding 17 of their own in the final quarter.

Timmerman led the scoring attack for the Warriors with 16 and Roelofs finished with 11. Doud cleaned the boards with 13 rebounds, and
Hannah McGlone added 11.

Winona State shot 40.3 percent from the field and 30.3 percent from behind the arc. UPRMÂ shot 26.7 percent from the field and just 7.7 percent from behind the arc. Winona State made 19 of 30 free throws for 63.3 percent, while UPRMÂ made three of their six free throws for 50 percent.

The Warriors are back in action tomorrow at 10 a.m. as they try to split with the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon, who they faced on Friday.
