WINONA, Minn. – The #6 Winona State Warriors (25-4, 16-4 NSIC) had their ten match winning streak snapped on Saturday, falling in straight sets (25-14, 25-13, 25-21) to #2 Minnesota Duluth (25-3, 17-3 NSIC). Junior
Taylor Goar recorded her 1,000 kill in the second set on Saturday. Prior to the match
Jamie Cairncross was honored as the Warriors lone senior.
The Warriors could not get going offensively on Saturday, hitting below .150 in each set. Meanwhile the Bulldogs would hit .484 and .360 respectively in the first two sets to get out to a big lead.
Lauren Kudronowicz and
Maria Wrage each had six kills to lead the Warriors offense on Saturday.
Jamie Cairncross had 12 digs to lead the defense. Minnesota Duluth was able to win the battle at the net, combing for seven blocks.
Minnesota Duluth methodically built up a six-point lead in the first set and never let the Warriors -recover. A 7-1 run in the middle of the set provided the Bulldogs a 12-point lead and they would go on to win a score of 25-14.
The Warriors held a 5-2 advantage in the second set but the Bulldogs scored eight of the next nine points in the set to take a 10-6 lead. The Warriors never got closer than three the rest of the way as UMD took the set 25-13.
After the intermission the Warriors seemed like a motivated team, jumping out 7-1. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs would rally tying the set at ten and pulling in front 13-10. Winona State would recover and held a 20-17 lead late in the set. Minnesota Duluth made one final run, scoring six straight and taking a 23-20 lead, a lead they will hold onto, winning 25-21.
Winona State finishes the season in fifth place in the Northern Sun and will be on road for the first round of the NSIC Tournament. Their opponent will be announced later today but it will be either Augustana or Minnesota Duluth.
