CROOKSTON, Minn. – Winona State's (24-3, 15-3 NSIC) streak of sweeps was snapped on Saturday but they did set a new school record with their 15
th NSIC win on the year. The Warriors also won their ninth straight match by beating Minnesota Crookston (10-15, 6-11 NSIC) 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22.
Winona State controlled much of the first set, jumping out 14-6. The Warriors would extend their lead to ten at 20-10 before winning the set 25-19.
The Golden Eagles used the momentum they had gained at the end of the first set to help propel them to a 10-5 lead in the second set. The UMC lead would get as large as eight, 18-10 before the Warriors pulled within three at 21-18. Minnesota Crookston held off the late rally to win 25-21.
The third set was competitive throughout, the Warriors had the largest lead of the set, four at 16-12. Minnesota Crookston would take a lead at 18-17 but Winona State would come back and take a 23-19 lead before clinching the set 25-20.
The fourth and final set was just as competitive with both teams grabbing leads from each other. The Golden Eagles led late at 19-17 but the Warriors showed why they are the sixth ranked team in the nation. Winona State would outscore Minnesota Crookston 8-3 the rest of the set to win 25-22.
