Rally Comes Up Short For Warriors

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Despite a career-high 17 points from Liz Evenocheck, the #12 Winona State Warriors' (9-2, 4-1 NSIC) comeback effort came up short, falling 66-59 to Concordia St. Paul (7-3, 3-1 NSIC). The Warriors made a furious rally after trailing by 11 points in the third quarter.

The Winona State women's basketball team had a hot 7-0 run to start the game. Evenocheck had eight of the Warriors' 11 points in the first quarter of action. The Golden Bears would grab the lead six minutes into the first quarter and would create a nine-point advantage by the end the quarter. The Golden Bears out rebounded the Warriors 15-8.

The Golden Bears opened the second quarter by extending their lead to 11 points. The Warriors shooting went cold as they didn't score for six minutes until Tara Roelofs was able to connect on a pull-up jumper. The scoring would then go back and forth. Concordia would knock down two quick three-pointers, capitalizing on Warrior turnovers to gain a 35-20 lead. Jumpers from Evenocheck and Roelofs would help cut the deficit to 37-26 by the end of the half.

In a foul filled third quarter, Warriors were able to shave the lead down and tied the game at 46. Concordia wouldn't allow Winona State to capture the lead and held a 50-47 edge heading into the fourth quarter. Kayla Timmerman scored her first points of the game four minutes into the third quarter.

In the fourth Evenocheck would connect on a three-pointer to make it 54-50, two and a half minutes in. Jumpers from Roelofs and Jenny Weiland would pull the Warriors within a bucket at 55-54, with five and a half minutes left to play. Hannah McGlone would connect and once again bring the Warriors within a bucket at 59-58, with three minutes to play.

A Warrior turnover with 1:02 left would turn into two points the other way for the Golden Bears, giving them a 61-58 lead. Jenny Tuttle would draw a foul and make 1-of-2 free throws to make it 61-59 with 44 seconds left. Another Warrior turnover led to a late Golden Bears three-pointer, a basket that would ultimately put the game away for CSP.
