WINONA, Minn. – Jenny Tuttle led the #16 Winona State (12-2, 7-1 NSIC) women's basketball team to a 76-66 victory over Bemidji State (3-8, 0-7 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon to close out 2016. Four Warriors scored in double digits, including
Hannah McGlone, who recorded her fourth consecutive double-double.
Hannah McGlone knocked down two free throws to initially get the Warriors on the board. The first quarter was tightly contested, but the Warriors were able to build a nine-point lead with just under a minute left in the quarter.
Jenny Tuttle had a lights-out first quarter as she was three of four from behind the arc and had 11 points. As a team the Warriors shot 53 percent from the field and connected on five of seven, three-pointers, for 71 percent.
The second quarter again saw good shooting from both teams. The Beavers were able to tie the scores at 28, halfway through the quarter. The Warriors answered and went up 12 points with three-pointers from
Tara Roelofs and Tuttle. The Beavers would respond with a three-point shot of their own. With six seconds left, the Beavers hit a jumper and trailed the Warriors 40-33 going into the locker rooms.
Tuttle amassed 21 points by shooting 8-11 from the field and 4-6 from behind the arc in the first half. The Warriors shot 50 percent from the field and 58 percent from behind the arc in the half.
In the third quarter the Beavers continued their pursuit to get an edge on the Warriors but the 57 percent shooting from the Warriors would suffocate those hopes. The Beavers would connect on a jumper and a three-pointer to cut the Warriors' lead to six points with 15 seconds left in the quarter.
MaKena Panning would hit a three-pointer as the clock expired giving WSU a 57-48 lead.
The Beavers made three-pointers put them in a better position as they were able to rally back and only trail by 10 points with 1:28 left to play. A handful of Warrior free throws allowed them to hold on to their 10-point advantage and complete the 76-66 victory.
Winona State shot 53 percent from the field, 44 percent from behind the arc and made 10 of 15 free throws. Bemidji State shot 46 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point land and made three of six free throws.
Jenny Tuttle led all scorers with her career-high 25 points.
Hannah McGlone had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the double-double.
Tara Roelofs added 13 points and
Kayla Timmerman also added 10 points.
The Warriors are back in action in the new year on January 6
th and 7
th as they face Southwest Minnesota State (1-11, 1-7 NSIC) and the University of Sioux Falls (10-2, 6-2) on the road.
