#14 Warriors Hold Off Mustangs

MARSHALL, Minn.The #14 Winona State (13-2, 8-1 NSIC) women's basketball team halted the rally of the Mustangs, Friday night to earn a 74-65 victory. Jenny Tuttle led the way with 21 points; Jenny Weiland added 14 and Hannah McGlone had 11.
 
Neither team could create much separation early in the opening quarter. The Warriors did go up nine but SMSU got within two possessions by the end of the quarter. The scoring would continue to be tight in the second quarter as both teams scored 17 points and the Warriors headed to the locker room with the same margin as the first quarter.
 
In the third quarter the Warriors would outscore the Mustangs 21-12. A layup from Emily Wirth with 2:24 left pushed the Warriors' lead to 19 points. Two sets of made free throws from the Mustangs cut into the deficit to trail 59-44 by the end of the third quarter.
 
The Mustangs charged their way back into the game in the final quarter. The Mustangs were able to eliminate at 15-point Warrior lead down to just two points with just under a minute left to play. Free throws and key three-pointers from Tuttle allowed the Warriors to hang on to the lead and regain a nine-point advantage.
 
The Warriors shot 48 percent from the field and 38 percent from three-point range. The Warriors made eight of 14 free throws. The Mustangs shot 42 percent from the field and 36 percent from behind the arc. The Mustangs made 12 of 16 free throws.
 
Tuttle led all scorers with 21 points by making eight of 14 field goals and connecting on three of six three-pointers. Jenny Weiland had 14 points and seven rebounds. Hannah McGlone added 11 points by going 5-6 from the floor and grabbed five rebounds.
 
The Warriors will face University of Sioux Falls (11-2, 7-2 NSIC) Saturday in Sioux Falls S.D. at 4 p.m.
