Tara Roelofs and
Hannah McGlone all scored in double figures as the Warriors defeated the Minnesota State Mavericks 79-64.
Jenny Tuttle's career-high 23 points helped boost the Warriors to 1-0 to start the weekend.
The first quarter started out fast as both teams scored on their opening possessions. Timmerman would be the first Warrior to get a basket as WSU got out to 11-6 lead. Two quick Maverick three-pointers would give them a 12-11 advantage. The opening quarter was pretty even until the Warriors would go on an 11-1 run to make the score 23-14 with two minutes left in the quarter. The Warriors would hold a six point, 25-19, after 10 minutes.
The Mavericks would get the first points of the second quarter as the Warriors struggled initially to get a basket. Timmerman would get things going with three consecutive baskets to make it 31-27 about half way into the quarter.
Tara Roelofs, who struggled to find points early in the game, would knock down a jumper with just a minute left before the half. The Mavericks would get another basket before heading to the locker room trailing Winona State 37-35.
To open the second half, the Mavericks would connect on a jumper to tie the game at 37-37, the first time it had been be tied since the first quarter. The Warriors would regain the lead when Roelofs went one-of-two from the free throw line. With four minutes left in the third quarter, a
Hannah McGlone basket tied the game at 48.
Emily Wirth would break the tie with two free throws to put the Warriors up 50-48 with 1:36 left in the third. The Warriors would end the quarter with a four point lead.
Roelofs hit a three-pointer two minutes into the fourth quarter to give the Warriors a ten point lead at 60-50. The Mavericks would fight and cut the deficit to four, but were unable to regain a lead of their own. Winona State responded with a 12-0 run and went on to top the Mavericks by 15, 79-64.
The Warriors shot 48 percent from the field and 41 percent from three-point range. Making 14-17 free throws the Warriors shot 82 percent. The Mavericks shot 38 percent from the field and 25 percent from three-point range while making all seven of their free throw opportunities.The Mavericks benched scored 27 points on the evening.
Tuttle led all scorers with her career-high 23 points, including making eight of her nine free throws. Tuttle also dished out seven assists. Timmerman had 16 points while shooting 63 percent from the floor. Roelofs added 13 points and tied for a team-high, eight rebounds. McGlone had eight rebounds and 12 points.
The Warriors (9-1, 4-0 NSIC) will head to St. Paul Saturday to face Concordia St. Paul (6-3, 2-1 NSIC) at 4 p.m.
