ROCHESTER, Minn. – The No. 10 Winona State softball team concluded its WSU Dome Tournament with a 3-1 showing, splitting a pair of matchups Saturday in Rochester.
The Warriors dropped the opener – and their first of the season – to Pittsburg State 4-0 before rebounding with a 6-0 shutout win over Northwest Missouri in the tournament's final game.
GAME ONE: Pittsburg State 4, WSU 0
Starter Alex Walker (0-1) pitched well for the Warriors, striking out five batters and surrendering five hits while giving up three earned runs, but allowed runs in each of the second and third innings before a two-run home run in the sixth inning and received no run support from the Warrior offense in the 4-0 defeat.
McKenna Larsen, Mariah Schultz, Allyson O'Herron and Jamee Schleis accounted for WSU's four hits in the opener, but the Warriors struck out nine times as a team against the Gorillas' Emmie Robertson, who improved her record to 7-1 on the young season.
GAME TWO: WSU 6, Northwest Missouri 0
WSU rebounded in fine fashion against the Bearcats to close out the tournament, posting a 6-0 victory led by Larsen's 3-for-3 game with 4 RBI, including a 3-run fourth-inning home run.
Hanna Lythberg improved to 3-0 in the circle with a six-hit complete game shutout, walking just one batter and striking out five.
After two scoreless innings, WSU got on the board in the third when a fielding error allowed Reed Karsten to reach, scoring Schleis. Larsen later in the inning added the first of her 4 RBIs in the game with a single up the middle to score Karsten.
WSU added to the lead in the following inning when Schleis produced an RBI double, and eventually scored on the Larsen home run.
Larsen and Schleis each went 3-for-3 in the game, while Mariah Schultz , Lani Van Zyl and Paige Keegan also recorded a hit in the game.
WSU (5-1) returns to the RCTC Dome Wednesday to take on Wisconsin-Parkside for a doubleheader slated for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
