ROCHESTER, Minn. – The No. 21 Winona State softball team swept a midweek doubleheader with UW-Parkside, earning 7-4 and 12-4 victories Wednesday afternoon at the RCTC Dome in Rochester.
GAME ONE: WSU 7, UW-Parkside 4
The Warriors scored in all but one inning to earn a 7-4 win in the opener. The Rangers opened the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the first, but WSU answered in the bottom of the inning as McKenna Larsen scored Reed Karsten. WSU added a pair in the second with RBI singles from Allyson O'Herron and Jamee Schleis to make it 3-1.
Parkside added three runs off starter Hanna Lythberg in the fourth, but again the Warriors answered in the bottom of the frame as Schleis added her second RBI single and Reed Karsten picked up an RBI double to center field to put her team back in front 5-4.
The Warriors added an insurance run in each of the next two innings with an RBI single from Mariah Schultz and another RBI double from Karsten for the 7-4 win.
NSIC Pitcher of the Week Lythberg improved to 4-0 in the circle with a complete game victory, scattering five hits with two earned runs on three walks and four strikeouts.
GAME TWO: WSU 12, UW-Parkside 4
The Warriors jumped all over the Rangers in the nightcap, using a six-run second inning to stake WSU starter Larsen to all the run support she'd need. Parkside scored one run in the top of the first, but Karsten scored two runs with a double, and Larsen scored two more with a triple to center field, before a third two RBI hit – this time a single from Schleis – made it 6-1. Lani Van Zyl also had a 2 RBI double in the following inning to stretch the lead to 8-1 and later scored on a wild pitch to up the lead to 9-1.
A three-run home run from the Rangers made it 9-4, but WSU answered back with three in the bottom of the sixth on a 2 RBI triple from Larsen to give her 4 RBI for the game and five on the day as WSU sealed the 12-4 six-inning win.
Larsen improved her record to 3-0 with a complete game victory, giving up three earned runs on four hits with two walk and four strikeouts.
Next up for the Warriors (7-1) is its 10-game spring Florida trip from March 5-10.
