No. 10 Warriors Post 62-51 Victory Over St. Cloud State

WINONA, Minn. – The No. 10 Winona State women's basketball team survived a tough shooting night with a strong defensive performance to post its sixth straight victory in a 62-51 win over St. Cloud State Friday night in front of 946 fans in McCown Gymnasium.

Senior Connor Nagle was dialed in from 3-point range for the second straight game, hitting 6-of-13 shots from long distance to finish with a game-high 20 points and had game-bests with five assists and three steals. In the past two games, Nagle has hit 13 3-pointers after tying a career high with seven in last Saturday's win over Minnesota Crookston.

Junior Kayla Timmerman notched her second double-double of the season with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting and tied a career high with 14 rebounds.

Two of Nagle's 3-pointers came on back-to-back possessions early on to stake the Warriors to an 8-4 lead and the Warriors led 15-12 after the first quarter. The Huskies pulled ahead in the second quarter thanks to an 8-0 run that put SCSU up 24-18 midway through. But the Warriors responded with an equal run as a jumper from Tara Roelofs with just over a minute to play put WSU back in front 26-24 before the two teams before the Huskies hit a jumper to end the half tied at 26-26.

St. Cloud State used a 7-0 spurt to open the third quarter to take a 33-26 lead, but once again WSU matched the Huskies' run with one of their own as a 3-pointer from Nagle quickly tied it back up at 33-33 with 6:52 to play in the third. It would stay a one possession game until a jumper from Timmerman put WSU in front 43-39 with 1:12 to play in the quarter and another 3-pointer from Nagle to end the period put WSU up 46-41.

The Huskies still trailed by just four midway through the fourth when one final 3-pointer from Nagle opened up a 52-45 advantage, and after an SCSU basket, Alexis Foley hit a 3-pointer of her own – the only player other than Nagle to hit one – to make it 55-47 and the Warriors were able to put away the Huskies for the 62-51 win.

Despite shooting just 35.5 percent (22-of-62) six days after posting the nation's best shooting performance (67.8 percent) in the win over UMC, the Warriors had typically stellar defense, allowing the Huskies to shoot just 35 percent (21-of-60) and just 3-of-14 from 3-point range. The Warriors also controlled the glass with a 47-35 edge.

Reigning NSIC South Division Player of the Week Foley finished with 14 points, while Tara Roelofs added 10 for WSU.

Winona State (22-2, 15-2 NSIC) returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Minnesota Duluth at 4 p.m. in McCown Gym.
