Warriors Drop Doubleheader to Golden Eagles 4-2, 6-5

CROOKSTON, Minn. – Forced to play its home opener at its opponent's park due to a snowstorm, the Winona State baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Minnesota Crookston by scores of 4-2 and 6-5 Friday afternoon at the UMC Baseball Field in Crookston.

GAME ONE: UMC 4, WSU 2

The Golden Eagles scored four runs in the third inning of the opener and the Warriors were unable to erase the deficit. Scoreless after two innings, UMC used the long ball to jump out in front. Starter Mitchell Stalsberg was breezing through the inning, striking out the first two batters, but after giving up a two-out double and a walk, the southpaw ran into trouble, allowing back-to-back home runs to left field before striking out the next batter to end the inning.

The Warriors got in on the long ball action in the fourth inning with a solo shot from Mitch Voter and cut the lead in half with an RBI single from Michael Hommes, but couldn't cut into the lead any further as the 4-2 score would hold through the remainder of the seven-inning contest.

Stalsberg struck out eight batters in six innings while scattering four hits with four earned runs.

Andrew Geislinger picked up WSU's lone multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 at the plate.

GAME TWO: UMC 6, WSU 5

An eight-inning RBI single from the Golden Eagles proved to be the difference, breaking a 5-5 tie to earn the doubleheader sweep.

The Warriors scored first in the nightcap, taking advantage of a two-out UMC error to put up three unearned runs. Mitch Voter doubled to right center to score Jesus Cazares, then Voter scored on the next at-bat thanks to two-run home run by senior Tyler Nehring to move the Warriors in front 3-0.

A fielding error allowed the Golden Eagles to score a pair of runs in the top of the second and UMC briefly took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth with a two-run double. But WSU fought back with a pair of runs of their own on another home run, this time off the bat of Ryan Nyhagen to put the Warriors in front 5-4.

The sixth home run of the day – a solo shot with two outs in the fifth – tied the game at 5-5 and the score remained tied until the top of the eighth when the would-be winning run crossed the plate on a UMC RBI single.

Daniel Karlin-Kamin got the start for the Warriors in game two, pitching five innings and scattering six hits with four earned runs and eight strikeouts to earn a no-decision. Brett Herber (1-2) suffered the loss despite not allowing an earned run in three innings of work. Herber gave up just two hits while walking and striking out one batter each.

Due to weather, WSU (3-12) and the Golden Eagles will play just one nine-inning game Friday at 1 p.m. in Crookston.
