No. 15 Warriors Sweep Doubleheader with UMC 11-1, 6-0

FAYETTE, Iowa – The No. 15 Winona State softball team swept a doubleheader with Minnesota Crookston Saturday in home games moved to Upper Iowa due to weather. The Warriors won the opener 11-1 before claiming a 6-0 win in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: WSU 11, UMC 1

The Warriors scored early and often in the opener, claiming a win in just four and a half innings of play. Paige Keegan and Mariah Schultz each picked up an RBI in the first inning, and Allyson O'Herron and Reed Karsten had base hits to drive in runs in the second as WSU took a 4-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles scored a run in the top of the third, but WSU scored three in the bottom of the frame on an RBI triple from Chelsey Rodenkirch, and RBI double from Jamee Schleis and an RBI bunt from O'Herron to extend the lead to 7-1.

The Warriors put the game away with a four-run fourth inning as McKenna Larsen brought home two with a single to center and later scored on a passed ball. The score moved to 11-1 on a sacrifice fly from Schleis.

Hanna Lythberg (11-3) earned the win in the circle, scattering four hits while giving up just one earned run and striking out a pair of UMC batters.

GAME TWO: WSU 6, UMC 0

Alex Walker pitched a two-hit shutout in game two as the Warriors cruised to a 6-0 win. Walker struck out five batters without a walk or run in seven innings of work.

The Warriors got on the board in the bottom of the second when Allyson O'Herron singled home McKenna Larsen and upped its lead to 2-0 in the third with Lani Van Zyl's second home run of the season.

WSU continued the long ball in the fifth with a center field home run off the bat of Reed Karsten to make it 3-0. The Warriors' third home run of the day – a three-run shot from Jamee Schleis in the bottom of the sixth – pushed the lead to 6-0 as WSU cruised to the doubleheader sweep.

Karsten led the Warriors at the plate with three hits in four at bats with an RBI and two runs scored.

Winona State (21-7, 3-2 NSIC) is scheduled to play its home openers at Alumni Field Tuesday with a doubleheader against Wayne State beginning at 1 p.m.
