WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Winona State baseball team held an early lead but 10 unanswered runs propelled Seton Hill to a 10-3 win over the Warriors Saturday morning in the first of six games in Florida.
The Warriors scored first in the top of the third inning thanks in part to three straight singles – the latter two being bunts - to load the bases. After a flyout, an error on the shortstop on an RBI from Tyler Nehring allowed Michael Hommes and Kipp Youngquist to score and give WSU a 2-0 lead. The Warriors would make it 3-0 on the next pitch thanks to an RBI single from Jesus Cazares to plate Joe Kubera.
The Griffins got a run back in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1, but the Warriors still held onto the two-run advantage until the sixth inning. That's when the game took a turn, as WSU surrendered three straight three-run innings – helped by a three-run home run in the seventh and a two-run home run in the eighth – to put the game out of reach with the 10-3 final.
Daniel Karlin-Kamin (0-2) was saddled with the loss despite pitching well on the mound for the Warriors, scattering eight hits but giving up just one earned run with three strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
Nehring and Cazares each went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Kubera, Ryan Nyhagen, Hommes and Youngquist also picked up a hit in the game.
Winona State (2-6) is back in action Sunday for a 2 p.m. (CST) first pitch against Walsh (Ohio) in Auburndale.
